Chapters

  1. 0:00Welcome and check in

JC introduces himself, admits he often loses track of the day, and offers a warm daily check-in to remind viewers they are capable and worthy whether they feel okay or not.

  2. 0:42Questioning balance myth

The speaker unpacks the common message that we must seek balance, using physical examples (strength, mobility, injured ankle) to show that people are naturally asymmetrical and perfectionist balance is unrealistic.

  3. 1:56Balance as time allocation

Rather than forcing symmetry, the host suggests spending equal time learning about strengths and weaknesses and practicing each side (like standing on each foot) to understand capacity, build resilience, and give oneself grace.

  4. 3:29Practical invitation and close

The episode closes by reiterating that balance can be a fallacy and encouraging viewers to equally consider what they can and cannot do, followed by a friendly goodbye.

Hey, Cadre, how are we doing? It is Wednesday. Never going to remember what day it is, y'all. You're getting it live right here. Me trying to figure out what day it is every single darn day. My name's JC. If we've never shared time and space together before, now you know something about me. I never know what day it is. But I'm glad I'm here. I'm glad you're here. I know the things I know and I care about you. I'm here every single day. as your friendly face and voice reminding you that we hope you're doing okay.

But if you're not, you're still incredibly capable and incredibly worthy and you're probably still going to accomplish some pretty remarkable things today. You know, we're often sold the idea that we need to seek balance. Balance is good, but as with any word, we have to be careful of what it means and how we use it. Think about if you're considering balancing the strength of your right arm to your left arm, or the mobility of your right shoulder or your left shoulder, or maybe your ability to stand on one foot and stand on the other foot.

This idea of balancing out our sides. Here's the deal. We are not balanced beings. You may have broken your left ankle in 3rd grade playing soccer. So the capacity of your left ankle may be different than your right ankle. Your ability to stand at 1 foot is probably very different than your ability to stand on your other foot. So when we have this idea of like, okay, I should be balanced. I should be capable of doing this and that in an equal way. It's not true. And if you're attempting to do it and you can never accomplish it, how's that going to make you feel?

Not great. So I always like to offer this perspective. Rather than seeking balance as in symmetry of capacity, seek balance in the amount of time you spend on learning about yourself in the things you can do and things you can't do, things that come easy and the things that are hard, the things that are strong and the things that are weak. Because when you spend equal time, hey Cole, nice to see you my friend. When you spend equal time considering your capacity, you gain an understanding of what you can do.

And the most happy, most successful, most resilient people in the world aren't the people who are the best at doing things, but the ones who understand their capacity. So then they can give themselves grace and understanding, but they can also go, I know what I'm capable of doing and I'm going to do it. So rather than attempting to stand on both feet for 60 seconds today, stand on your right foot for a minute and maybe fall down 100 times, but take that whole minute to go, huh, what am I capable of here?

And then stand on your left foot for a minute. And you may never fall down. And you may be able to write poems and solve the world's issues while you're standing on your left foot, while on your right foot you stumble and struggle and fall. Spend equal time considering your capacity on both. That's where the benefit will lie. Balance a lot of times is a fallacy. We are not balanced beings. My invitation for you today is balance out the amount of time you spend on considering what you can do and what you can't do because both of those are part of who you are.

See you tomorrow y'all. Bye!
