Chapters

  1. 0:03Introduction and song title

The speaker pauses the video to introduce the song 'This Isn't Everything You Are' and greet the audience. This brief opening sets the tone and names the piece that frames the reflection.

  2. 0:47Pride month and statistic

The host notes June as Pride Month and frames the conversation around pride and difference, then shares a startling statistic about left-handed people and lawnmower accidents. The anecdote is used to highlight how designs and norms can disadvantage some groups.

  3. 1:45Left-handed anecdote explained

Using the left-handed lawnmower example, the speaker walks through concrete ways everyday tools are built for majority users and how that affects navigation. The segment links this idea back to Pride and the experience of living in a world not calibrated for certain identities.

  4. 2:56You are more than labels

The speaker returns to the song's theme, urging listeners to 'zoom out' from single labels and recognize their many facets and strengths. They also suggest this perspective helps us appreciate others beyond the aspects we find difficult.

  5. 4:18Chorus and closing

The host repeats the song's chorus as a calming reminder — 'this isn't everything you are' — offers a breathing cue, and wishes viewers a good weekend as the segment closes.

Hey, Cadre! I'm gonna hit pause right there, even before we get to any of the words of this beautiful song. It's called, This Isn't Everything You Are. Speak wonder, nice to see you, my friend. It's a song by Snow Patrol, This Isn't Everything You Are. The song goes on to say, hey, life is happening. Don't keel over. This isn't everything that you are. June is a month that a lot of people celebrate pride. Pride in who they are. And even more specifically, who they are that makes them different than the cultural normative, the way that the world is set up.

I have a fun stat for you. Actually, kind of a dramatic stat, but I think it's funny what it points to. You know that left-handed people are 900% more likely to be a part of a lawnmower accident than right-handed people. 900% more likely left-handed people than right-handed people. If you will go, that can't be true. I go, no, it actually is for a real simple reason. And that is because lawnmowers are right-handed. And if you're right-handed, you may be going, what does it even mean? How can a lawnmower be right or left-handed?

Well, think about where you place your foot. Think about where the pulley pull is. Think about where the gears and the changes are. Think about how the thing is set up in the bag. And let's say you're on the side of a hill or a mountain in a figure. And all of a sudden you go, it's like, oh, I've never thought about that. If you're right-handed. I'll tell you, if you're left-handed, you think about things like that all the time. You pick up a pair of scissors and you go, okay, how do I, how do I get used to using a pair of scissors that isn't designed for me.

So Pride Month is very important to people who kind of live in that world where they go, wow, this world is not designed for me. I can exist in it, I can navigate it, but it's not designed for me. So you're going to see a lot of contributors kind of speaking about the world of living with appreciation and love for oneself in a world that may not be exactly calibrated to who we are. And that's why I love this song. This isn't everything you are. So often we go, okay, I am this, I am that, I am this, I am that.

And we go, okay, that is who I am. But just like on a camera, if you zoom out a little bit, you realize that you are a lot more than those things that you or other people place labels on. And it does not dilute or diminish the power of those things, but it does give you more capability, more superpowers, more way of going, wow, yes, I know I am this. but I'm also that and that thing over there. And I really have a passion in this thing over here. And all of a sudden you go, wow, we are all not one thing.

We are all many things, which is really good for our own navigation of life. But also it's really good for us as we work to navigate this world with others. If we go, wow, that thing I don't appreciate about that person. I'm going to work on appreciating that thing about them. In the meantime, I'm going to realize all the other things that they are too. And that's where we go and that is what we do. I will fly forward to the chorus here. This isn't everything you are, y'all. Breathe deeply in the silence, no sudden moves.

This isn't everything you are. Have a great weekend.
