Chapters

  1. 0:01Welcome and scene setting

The host opens with friendly greetings, sits in a car overlooking a green intersection, and frames the idea that there are many ways to be well. This brief intro sets a calm tone and invites viewers to spend a few mindful minutes together.

  2. 1:10Song reflection

The host names the song 'I'd Rather Be Sailing' and summarizes its imagery of escape and return. He offers a personal interpretation that the song's 'you' may actually be the self, framing the idea of returning to oneself.

  3. 2:03Mind wandering example

Using a work-at-the-desk example, the host describes how attention can suddenly drift and time disappears, likening the mind to a vehicle that floats away. This illustrates a common experience of distraction and fatigue.

  4. 2:51Mantra as a vehicle

The host explains that mantra literally means 'vehicle of the mind' and offers the simple phrase 'I am' as an example that can steer attention back to presence. He emphasizes how repeating such a phrase can return you to the present moment.

  5. 3:41Invitation to notice and return

The host invites viewers to examine where their minds travel, why they go there, and what helps them return, punctuating the reflection with song lyrics. The segment closes with a prompt to consider your own habits of distraction and strategies for coming back to yourself.

Hey hey Cadre, how are we doing on this Thursday? Thursday, it's Thursday y'all. I hope you are great. I'm sitting as I often do in a gas station parking lot in my car, but this gas station is kind of up on a hill, so I'm looking out over an intersection. There's lots of green, lots of trees. Chris Fortman, how are you my friend? Nice to see you on this Thursday. But by golly, the sun is shining, the world is green, and it's really great to spend a few minutes with you right here, right now. I'm glad I'm here.

I'm glad you're here. I know the things I know, and I care about you. And I get really excited when all of a sudden I click on it and go, huh, I wonder who's here. Who's in this world? And maybe taking a few minutes to do the same thing that I'm doing. And that is considering that there's lots of ways to be well. When we take time to consider those ways, we all benefit from it. So there's a song. It's called Sailing, or I'd Rather Be Sailing, I think is the full title. And it's sung by this person.

It's a story song and they're kind of in a dark time of their lives and they say that they'd rather be sailing. And then they start going into all the imagery of being on the boat. And at the end they go, And at the end of the day, I want to come home to you. And it's always perceived that they're singing, you know, to someone. But I interpret it as that they're singing to themselves. It's like, I'd love to go sailing and then come home to you. You meaning yourself. And it makes me think, you know, there's times where I'm sitting at my desk, I'm preparing for a meeting, I'm working on a deck, you know, looking at the calendar and planning things out.

I'm working on a Gantt chart, whatever. And all of a sudden I go, whoa. Where did my mind go? The last five, 10 minutes, 30 minutes, hour, day, week, month somehow disappears. And in essence, it's as if your mind hopped into a vehicle and floated away. We all do that, right? We can think of it as distraction or fatigue or but The word mantra, we hear that word a lot, right? Like what's your mantra or everybody should have a mantra or let's make a mantra. Mantra translates from Sanskrit into English as a vehicle of the mind or a vehicle for the mind.

So if you think of what a mantra is, it's like maybe your mantra is I am, I am. And you keep saying I am, I am. I am is the vehicle for your mind to go through all the places that it goes. And then every single time you say I am, it steers that vehicle back to a space of presence, a space of you being where you are with what you have and honoring that. And as I always love to say again and again, and you can't help but listen to it. But it's my invitation for you today to consider Where does your mind go?

I guess sometimes we simply focus and say, oh, it went somewhere. That's bad. As opposed to going, well, where did it actually go? And why did it go there? What is there to find when you do the traveling, the distracting, the fatigue, the, you know, the audible or the, you know, the deviation from where we were supposed to be going? And then what is it that brings you back? I'd rather be sailing, yes I would, on an open sea. I'd stand at the railing if I could, feeling wild and free. The sun is on my neck, the wind is in my face.

The water's incredibly blue. And I'd rather be sailing. Yes, I'd want to go sail and then come home to you. Hey, think about all the stuff that happens there before you get to the coming home to you. That's my invitation for you today to consider where your mind goes and then what you do to bring it back. Have a good one.
