Hope everybody's doing all right. Let some people roll in. So today is another day. And the sun is out. Might be a little bit cold, but that's alright. Signal versus noise is a mental model of discerning valuable, relevant information from irrelevant, distracting or misleading information.
Cadre. Accidentally canceled his own live stream. Hope everybody's doing all right. Come sauna with us on Thursday. 2:30 till 4. I'm definitely down for that one.
Well, good morning. Let some people roll in. I accidentally canceled my own livestream earlier. So user error. That happens. So today is another day. We have breath in our lungs, love in our hearts. And the sun is out. Might be a little bit cold, but that's alright.
Signal versus noise is a mental model of discerning valuable, relevant information from irrelevant, distracting or misleading information. Steve Jobs used this 80:20 ratio of focusing 80% of his time on things that are important. Sometimes the same things that I value individuals for are sometimes the same thing that could be the noise in life.
Take five minutes and think about what is signal in your life and what is noise, what is important. When we're focused on the core things, that's more important. Looking forward to seeing you guys next week.
This week, I just wanted to jump in with this one. It was something that just came on the top of my mind this morning. I like to talk about real things in real time as they're happening. Have a good day. Back to some music.
Hello. Hello, Cadre. I made some mistakes this morning. Accidentally canceled my own live stream. So I hope everybody can pop in on here. I hope I didn't lose everyone. Let's see here. We got my dog asoff in the back being distracted by some peanut butter. Peanut butter is the chico. Turns out his listening skills dramatically increased by 100% with just a little bit of peanut butter. So today, today, everybody. Let's see. Here we go. Luke, good morning. Good morning, brother. How we doing? How we doing?
Good morning. It is Tuesday. Almost said Monday. Tuesday, February 3rd. Hope everybody's doing all right. Hope you got your coffee or your caffeine or your organic approach to the morning, whatever that looks like for you. For me, I'm a coffee person. Come sauna with us on Thursday. 2:30 till 4. I would do that last week. I didn't see it until late in the afternoon. I'm definitely down for that one. I'm put in my calendar actually taking note right now. Or I can do it later. Anyways, good morning everyone.
Good morning. Today I'm rolling in with the music. I have stressed out by 21. Not 21 pilots. 21 pilots. Yeah. I almost said Stone Temple pilots. Whole nother John, a whole nother area. Well, good morning. It is Tuesday. Let some people roll in. I accidentally canceled my own livestream earlier. I had to redo it. So user error. That happens. So today is another day. We have breath in our lungs, love in our hearts. And the sun is out. Might be a little bit cold, but that's alright. Sometimes we just have to take the wind.
With the storm today, one of the things that I want to talk about that's been on my mind recently, in the last few months actually is signal versus noise, right? Signal versus noise is this term that's been sticking out to me as we're all dealing with a lot of things, right? We're all feeling urgency and pressure and confusion and confrontation from all areas of life. And as you know, there's never a lack of information and opinions. There's. It's like, it's a never ending well of opinions, information and different perspectives and we can all be overwhelmed.
And this, this idea of signal versus versus noise I first heard a while back when. But it popped back up when I was at this new job. They gave me a plaque. It's like, you know, signal versus noise, knowing the difference, right? And I first heard about it actually. Steve Jobs used this signal versus noise, this 80:20 ratio of focusing 80% of his time on things that are important. Priority tasks, the things that need to get done, and then 20% on other things that are less important for him with this.
When I first heard about this, it was his approach back to coming back to Apple, right? Apple in the 90s, they weren't failing because their products sucked, but they had too many things going on, too many product rollouts, all these other things. They had too many good ideas. But what Steve Jobs did stepped in was like, hey, tons of good ideas. We're gonna boil it down and focus on the great ones, right? And they did crazy well. Crazy well. It doesn't sound right. Coffee's kicking in. They did really well.
But as I hear this in the business, I tie it to not just business, but our own lives when it comes to our mental health, the things we're receiving, the things we're paying attention to, news, all these other things. So I did a little digging and the best actual definition I can come up with according to the Google, or Google if you're not as cool as me, is noise versus signal is a mental model of practicing the practice of discerning valuable, relevant information, the signal from irrelevant, distracting or misleading information to improve the understanding and decision making.
And I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I'm someone who is fairly new into politics and diving deep. What a time to dig into politics right now. We'll just leave it at that. But also not just politics, but where do I stand in the world? What do I believe? Where do I want to show up, how do I want to show up? And what information am I taking in that I'm holding on to, absorbing and regurgitating back out or spitting back out or where and paying attention, like what I'm allowing in the input versus output, if you will.
And I really had to think about all the things like, okay, what is signal and what is noise for me? And I'm not gonna lie, at first it was uncomfortable for me. It was very uncomfortable because I had to be honest with myself and admit like, oh, I'm allowing myself to, to be distracted with some things. I am allowing myself to be led astray based off of emotion and entertainment value on social media or even things with friends, right? I have really a really good friend group, a lot of opposing viewpoints and perspectives.
But that relationship is there. It's like, okay, I value this relationship. I love these people, I care about them. That signal is strong. But also it comes with a lot of noise. Sometimes it comes with a lot of the very the same things that I value individuals for are sometimes the same things that could be the noise in life, right? Everyone is shooting me different memes and reels and news articles about what they think or how they feel or all these other things. And I had to identify. It's like, hey, the signal from this relationship is the love, the care, the compassion, the empathy, the sound reasoning, all these things.
But the noise is all these other things that I'm getting from them. The news articles, the political beliefs, it's like, which, yeah, some of their beliefs, they're valid. All of their feelings and beliefs, they're valid. But that doesn't mean that I have to take in additional noise. And that was hard for me to set those safeguards in place. Like, hey, you know what? I value our relationship, I value our friendship. I value you as a human. But all these other things, I just don't. I would appreciate it to not be sent all these things, right?
To not be swayed. And that was a hard conversation for me to tell someone, like, hey, I love you, I care about you. But, like, just stop sending me stuff. Like, I know your views, whether I agree with them or not. I had to identify and lock in, okay, on my journey as a person, what am I searching for? Who am I becoming? How do I want to show up? I want to show up as someone that is empathetic, loving, caring, loving on my neighbor, all these other things, right? That's how I want to show up. That is the signal for me.
So everything that I do is needs to double down on that signal. And I need to water. It's a seed. I need to water. So anything that comes in, for me personally, I can't speak for everyone, but anything that comes into my life that is distracting or causing confusion or chaotic, it's like, okay, we need to turn the dial down on that noise and turn the signal up. Because the way I choose to show up in the world, my signal is so strong, the ways that I choose to show up is making an impact everywhere I go, any city, any.
Whether it's the corporate space, whether it's Cadre, embrace, north, the gym, whether it's to you're on the left side of the aisle or the right side of the aisle, my signal is so strong, it clutters out the noise. Where I'm showing up as a loving, caring, compassionate human, and I'm loving on humans first. That's just how my approach, right, Completely agnostic in the sense right now to politics, just showing up as a human. And that's my signal. And when I focus on that it's crazy how calm and life gets.
And I can approach things like, hey, all this noise, we're gonna turn it down and we're gonna listen to the beat of my drum. Oh, that's kind of good, actually. The beat of my drum. Love, care, compassion. I said it the other day. I would have been a great hippie back in the 70s because I'm that guy that shows up like, hey, if you ever seen that movie Tropical Thunder with Will Ferrell, he's like, everybody love everybody. That was his overall message. Like, everybody love everybody. But when I started doing that, I noticed that my energy changed.
Right. I get to show up in spaces, and I still carry around a lot of the same weight that everybody else is. But the difference is I'm not adding gas onto my fire, right? I'm not adding in so much distraction that I can't think for myself. And I can't carry out my mission to show up how I want because the noise is loud. It can be reactive, it could be emotionally draining, and it can spike urgency. And for me, I don't do well in urgency. I don't. I'm one of those people I show 15 minutes early everywhere I go, just in case something happens or I need to clutter my, declutter my thoughts and sit down and just gather myself and carry on with the show.
But that's what I wanted to talk about today. I always end up with a challenge. I challenge you today to just sit, take five minutes and think about what is signal in my life and what is noise, what is important, the things that I want to prioritize, whether it's how I show up in the world, work tasks, you apply it to where you see fit. But what's the big point is, what is the noise? What is the distraction? What is in my life currently that is leading me off my path, that is making my signal a little bit weakened and causing me to either waste energy, time and all these things.
Yeah, all the. Some of the noise and the distractions that are there. It's not saying that they're not important, but my goal, my point is here, is that when we're focused on the core things, that's more important. All these things can be good, but what our priorities are are the great things. It's like Apple and Steve Jobs. It's like, hey, we have all this. Apple MacBook, tablets, watches, all this, but let's boil it down blue. Blow up the iPhone and take off and get everything but in the back end, right?
And let's just be like Apple, except with all the update updates. I'm not a fan. That's what I got for you guys today. Just want to jump on your quick, kind of just signal versus noise. I think about it everywhere I go. So I challenge you. One of the things that I did, I reset my algorithm. Because when I get emotional and fast, filled with anxiety or I'm reactive myself. Oh, that, like, button gets going. That, like, button. That, like, button. And then all of a sudden, I know, like, that emotional space that I was in when I liked all these posts and reels.
It's like, now that's all I see, and it's feeding that anxiety. So I reset my algorithm yesterday. So we got to build it back up. So now I'm being intentional and building it through my signal, right? The love, care, compassion, hippie vibes. We're going back to 1960. What was the height? I don't know. 1968, maybe seven. I don't know. Whenever Jimi Hendrix was on stage. We're gonna. So we're going back to peace, love, empathy, and understanding. Personal development, growth. We're gonna buckle in.
So I challenge you. Identify. Take five minutes. What is signal? What is noise in your life? And I challenge you to create some. Create a little bit of space between the two. But that's what I got for you. Looking forward to seeing you guys next week. This week, I just wanted to jump in with this one. It was something that just came on the top of my mind this morning. And as I was all over the place because of a lot of noise myself, so trying to readjust. So I like to talk about real things in real time as they're happening.
Even if I sound scattered and my coffee's kicking in. We're human. So. Good morning, Cadre. Have a good day. That's what I got for you today. Back to some music. What do we got here?
