I hope you have a great rest of your Monday and hope you're enjoying the spring weather. I'll see you next Monday. Bye.

Hello Cadre Crew. Happy Monday. Happy May. First time I'm coming to you live in May. Give it about one minute here. Wait for folks to join us today. Hope you're all having a great Monday so far. Hello, welcome. Give up one more minute before we start up. Robert, welcome. Okay, we can go ahead and kind of get started. I'm Batman Tappy. I'm a graduate student in industrial organizational psychology, mainly focusing on leadership and team effectiveness. And today we'll be talking about self leadership.

But we'll first start with the three things of three. So I want you to kind of ground yourself, reset and take a minute here. Halfway through the day on Monday start, start with what are three things that you're experiencing currently? This could be feelings, emotions, sensations. Just kind of take a minute to be where you are right now and think about what are you experiencing right now. Could just be that you're cold. I guess it's starting to warm up. So maybe not cold anymore, but maybe you're just feeling something cold or you could be feeling emotion.

What are three things that you're feeling or experiencing right now? I mean, what are three intentions that you have for the rest of the day? I speak welcome, Rick. Welcome, Becky. Hi. So what are three intentions that you have for the rest of the day? Could be just stuff on your to do lists. Could be maybe you want to appear a certain way later on. Maybe you want to show up a certain way later on. Maybe you want to have a lot of energy this afternoon. So what are three intentions that you have for the rest of the day?

Think about it. And then lastly, what are three things that you are grateful for? What are three things that you're grateful for? Could be from the weekend, could be coming up this week, could be from something small this morning. I know last week I was riding a bus and I saw a man who was struggling to get his change out and so he, so he went ahead and somebody riding the bus went ahead and got their money out and paid for it there. So I'm grateful to have, you know, nice people in the community and see that kindness happen.

Tired, hopeful, under caffeinated. Sounds like you need some coffee. Speak. Wonder Eric. Drink water, Exercise, eat healthy, good habits. I need to start doing that as well. Coffee, coffee, coffee. Don't have too much but yes, I'm going to get some, some caffeine soon after this as well. Okay, so those are the three things of three. Kind of grounded in some positive psychology where we're being, where we are being where our feet are. What are our intentions? What do we want to manifest per se? And then what are three things you are grateful for?

Great practices to think about, to kind of reset the day. But also if you want to journal as well, beginning or ending the day, it's a great way to practice. So as you can see in the title, I have self leadership as kind of the. The what we'll be talking about today. And so this bringing a meta analysis. A meta analysis is just a culmination of all the research that has currently been done. And this is from 2021, all about self leadership. It's from Harari and coming out of the University of Florida Atlantic University.

So what is self leadership? It's similar to that of self management, except it goes a step further. So self leadership is the process by which individuals influence themselves to achieve self direction, self motivation, improving their thoughts, feelings and behaviors at work. So it's similar to self management, a term that we've probably all heard or you know, you can just break it down. It's manage the self. So it's a lot of controlling emotions appearing a certain way. With self management, however, self leadership takes it a step further and it's really that guidance, it's guiding to a more positive outcome of that management process.

So I always want to talk about leadership. I like to express that we're all leaders in some domain, you know, whether we're leading a company, a family or just yourselves. And this is that example of self leadership. So there's three areas of self leadership and I mean strategies of self leadership. And it's behavior focused, constructive thought pattern and natural, natural rewards. So kind of some scientific terms, but I'll break it down. So behavior focused strategies are things like self observation, self goal setting, self reward and self cueing.

So it's all about, you know, how do we get ourselves moving, moving in a certain direction, promoting self regulation and intentional action. So having intention behind what we want to be doing and not just letting our emotions get the best of us. So that self goal setting is having an intentional target that you're shooting for. Self reward and punishment is that awareness of what do we want and what's not good. And then self cueing is that intentional act of starting up to do something. You know, we talk, there's a lot of talk about persistence, there's a lot of self queuing, being able to do something that you don't want to do.

And self observation is that awareness piece. So it's all. So that behavior focused aspect of self leadership is all about promoting Self regulation and intentional action. And then there's constructive thought strategies which is positive self talk, visualizing success and challenging dysfunctional beliefs. So this is a lot of, kind of bringing in some mindfulness techniques but without calling it mindfulness kind of that constructive thought strategies being very intentional about how we think about things.

So positive self talk is having that awareness of when there is negative self talk and then, you know, finding maybe the good in the situation where we, you know, reframe it or maybe it's, you know, highlighting our past successes to show that we can overcome challenges. And then that all comes down to challenging dysfunctional beliefs. So it's promoting adaptive like thinking and mental, mental ability and then natural reward strategies. I want to go back to that constructive thought. I work with baseball team and we do a lot of mental imagery and that's sort of visualizing success.

Mental imagery is just putting yourself on the field, you know, succeeding. And that can, that has been shown especially in athletics that once you get on the field and actually playing in a game, it reduces that stress, that anxiety of playing in the game because you mentally, you've been there before doing it. And similarly, we look at. Hitendra Wadra is a professor, a business professor out of Columbia University and he has an article on Harvard Business Review and a book about leadership and flow.

And it's a lot about positive self talk and challenging dysfunctional beliefs as well as a little bit getting into that intention piece, that behavior focused strategy of, you know, really being intentional. But it talks about, you know, before you go into a meeting, taking a minute to pause and think about how you want to show up in that meeting. So when I talk about the three things of three and the intentions, how do you want to show up in that meeting? And being intentional and then seeing that success in the meeting and then that sets you up for success in that meeting.

So and then the last strategy of, of self leadership is cons is natural reward strategies. So it's focusing on the enjoyable aspects of work gratitude or. And building intrinsic motivation into tasks. So it's promoting satisfaction and meeting in your work. And it's not, you know, it's finding that and seeking the satisfaction in work rather than just having it not be satisfying or satisfying but finding the satisfying aspects. It was a big push a few years back about, you know, meaning behind work and there was a lot of buzzwords about it.

Ikigage or whatever that term was. And it was really hard because sometimes in some way work capacities, it's not easy to find meaning. Exactly. But we can always maybe look to something. So even if you hate your job and hate everybody there, there's got to be something that's bringing you to work. And maybe that's because it's providing, providing money so you can go and go out to eat or maybe it's giving you money so you can go out and do fun things. So while work might suck by looking at the enjoyable aspects where like once I get done, then I can go have fun, you know, it's this hard work will pay off in that way.

So it's finding the meaning in work and really taking self initiative with that. So what are some, what can lead into some high self leadership? Well, personality traits is one thing that psychologists always look at. So conscientiousness, open to experience and extroversion as well as emotional stability and agreeableness. So the big five all relate in some way. Mainly conscientiousness is the strongest predictor of the behavioral strategies which makes sense, you know, detail oriented, being on time, being able to control your behavior, that appears to correlate really well.

Open to experience. So those constructive thought strategies. So if you're more open to experience, you're going to be more kind of insightful, think more about things and kind of explore new strategies. So like constructive thought strategies, which is all about positive self talk and challenging dysfunctional beliefs, you're able to kind of open, be more open to things. And then extroversion is related to natural rewards as well as extroversion and openness to experience are both related to natural reward strategies.

So again that openness, you know, seeing other parts, you know, exploring why something might be enjoyable, why work might be enjoyable. So thinking about that, that self initiative behind your thought. So overall the kind of the biggest takeaway is that all these have been found to be trainable and they've. And so by training these three areas of naturally reward strategies, constructive thought strategies and behavior focused strategies has been shown to then, you know, relate to higher job satisfaction and higher job attitudes as well as higher self efficacy which is just confidence, having more confidence in yourself and then higher job performance as well.

So all these are trainable areas which we can train in the self regulation techniques, you know, awareness techniques. All these we can talked about before emotional competencies and training emotional intelligence. And this directly relates to that as well and then provides some more actionable skills to not just build those skills but to keep building that and to keep improving and building self efficacy in yourself. So yeah, the biggest takeaway is that all this is trainable. It's not easy. I'll say that too.

Nothing is easy, especially on this social emotional learning path. But it's all can be trainable and shown to, you know, effective leadership. And even I've read an article about building these strategies can help you give better performance reviews. So just overall enhances your your overall leadership abilities as well once you can start leading yourself and providing direction in yourself. So that's all I got for you today. I hope you have a great rest of your Monday and hope you're enjoying the spring weather.

I'll see you next Monday. Thanks for joining everyone. Bye.
