  1. 0:02Leadership building blocks third installation focuses on building capacity

How are you building capacity? How are you creating resources to move the needle in terms of DEI? Building capacity can be and look like a number of different things. Think about how you can practice building capacity not just for yourself, but for the individuals and teams that you lead.

Hello Doctor E. Hope you are doing well. Leadership building blocks third installation, in addition to vulnerability and intentionality, want you to begin to think about capacity. How are you building capacity? How are you creating resources to move the needle in terms of DEI? How are you allocating resources to move the needle in terms of DEI? Creating and allocating go hand in hand, but don't want you to think that all resources are just financial resources can be a number of things, tools, strategies, trainings, opportunities to engage building capacity, both on an individual and institutional level is very important.

If you continue to do the same kinds of things, you are going to continue to achieve the same types of results. So how are you creating spaces and places for folks to develop in different kinds of ways and enhanced kind of ways and hopefully in better, more fundamentally constructive kinds of ways. So building capacity can be and look like a number of different things. Like I mentioned trainings, like I mentioned opportunities to engage, a very huge favorite of mine. But more importantly, how are you creating opportunities for folks to practice what they have been taught or to implement what they have researched or accomplished?

So building capacity looks like that, but it also looks like creating opportunities for folks to engage with each other and to share and learn and glean from each other. So as a leader, you can create all of those types of opportunities, whether it is a team construct, in team meetings or departmental meetings, whether it's in your one to ones, when you ask folks to think about ways that they can develop, and more importantly, in managing up things that they might want to get or receive from you, and you can also think about it collectively in terms of team building, what does it look like to create those moments where folks can practice leadership and begin to do those kinds of things that hopefully they're going to grow and develop into.

So as a leader, building capacity looks just like that for yourself as an individual. But then also in terms of progression, organizationally, how are you creating some of those opportunities for folks to step into some of those leadership roles as well? So think about capacity on a number of levels. First being you as an individual or as a leader development in terms of progression, your teams, your staff, your departments, but then organizationally and collectively, creating spaces where that type of engagement and interaction, and I would even say challenging, can, can be very useful in learning.

So think about that and think about how you can begin to practice building capacity not just for yourself, but for the individuals and the teams that you lead. That's number three, and I will see you soon with number four.
