Doctor E talks about the acronym EDI, equity, Diversity and inclusion. Says diversity is all about difference, not just the visible differences that we have. He says it's those underneath attributes and characteristics that really can make and bolster growth and development.
Hello. Doctor E here, talking more about the acronym EDI, equity, Diversity and inclusion. Talked a little bit about the order of the acronym, which there really is no rhyme or reason other than I think most folks have just bought into the flowingness and the palatability of that acronym, or DeI EDI, but not necessarily die for obvious reasons. And so what I like to do is talk about how I think the three are linked and interconnected and show how they actually work in congruency with each other.
I believe, and I totally believe that the foundation is diversity. And diversity is all about difference, not just the visible differences that we have. Race, gender, age, all of those other kinds of things that you can look at someone and be able to kind of intuitively think, suggest and or guess about them, but then some of those beneath the surface, invisible kinds of things, particularly if you are a leader, how folks communicate, how folks respond to challenge, what might inspire or spark you, some individual, in ways that you're looking to motivate them.
All of those kinds of differences, those fundamental differences that aren't necessarily visible, are just as important as those visible differences as they might talk about and relate to experiences and background and perspectives and what has led to all of those things and attributes and characteristics that make us usually. So when you think about diversity, don't focus on one or two visible aspects. I really want to encourage you to think way and much deeper than that to all of those invisible attributes and characteristics, particularly when it comes to building your teams, particularly when it comes to engaging the folks around you.
And most important, particularly when it comes to you leading folks in a manner that is going to be really healthy, productive, and hopefully leads to a lot of development for you and your organization. And so I believe it's those underneath attributes and characteristics or those invisible qualities that really can make and bolster growth and development. And so when you get, when you start to think about how folks communicate, what might be the best way to reach someone, how can you get the best out of an employee or team member?
All of those things might take a little bit more work to get beneath the surface, to kind of drill down, peel back some of the layers, to fundamentally understand who folks are, where they come from, why they see things the way that they do, how do they learn, how do they communicate, what makes them jazzed, what gets them excited? All of those, all of those kinds of things are absolutely components and qualities and dynamics of diversity. And so think about diversity in that robust kind of way.
Yes, all of the visible characteristics and attributes are important, but it is the underneath characteristics and attributes that are equally, if not more important, particularly when it comes to you being a leader and you reaching folks and understanding folks. So diversity is all about difference. Stay tuned, and I'm going to talk about inclusion.
