  2. 2:06Cadre says being sick eats away at his mental health when he's sick

Carrie has been sick for the past two, two and a half weeks. It's the second time this year that she's been pretty sick. Someone pointed out her pride about being sick. Do you have a coach that can point out your blind spots?

Hey, Cadre. Family doctor Carey here. I grew up as a sickly kid. That was my identity. I think I set a record at my ear, nose and throat doctor's office by having the most ear infections before I turned age two and one of the youngest that they had ever put ear tubes in. I then proceeded to have multiple more ear infections, to the point where it damaged my hearing. I ended up having then sinus issues and had five sinus surgeries before I turned 21 and just constantly was sick, constantly going to the doctor.

I had a specialist for everything my entire life, and this then even translated into adulthood where I ended up with these random things that they couldn't even diagnose. I had a GI specialist, I had a gyno specialist, I had a bladder specialist. And at one point in my life, in my twenties, I was literally taking eleven prescription medications on a daily basis, like daily medications. And about a year ago, I got off every medication. And this was not an easy feat. It was a lot of coming out of agreement with that identity of being sick, I realized that I had actually kind of like welcomed that as my identity of who I was.

I was just always the sick one. And a lot of it involved getting some mental health care, getting some coaching, leaving toxic relationships, and just really putting my mental health at the forefront because I also was suffering from depression, anxiety, PTSD. And so to get off every medication and be able to live with some of the things that are still bothering me, but a lot of the things that have actually been healed is a miracle. It's a true miracle. And for me, I credit God for most of it, but whatever you want to credit it for, I just think it's miraculous that I was able to get off every medication and I've now been medication free for a year.

And it's, to me, just one of the biggest accomplishments I've ever done too, because it meant really reclaiming my identity as something else outside of just being sick all the time. Now, that story being said, I have been sick for the past about two, two and a half weeks. And unfortunately this is the second time this year that I've been pretty sick. I was also sick in July with COVID for the second time for about three and a half weeks. Just took forever to get over. And then this time I have something viral and it just eats away at my mental health when I'm sick, for many reasons, one of them, which a lot of people can probably resonate with, especially if you're an extrovert, is just the isolation of I live alone and I work from home, so I don't really see people.

And so when I don't go out and do things social or go to my, you know, my small groups or whatever, I don't have any social interaction. It can really wear on my mental health. And then I don't get to go to the gym because I don't feel good. And the gym to me sometimes is like my social outing for the day. And I just feel great after I work out, I feel physically great, so I haven't been able to work out. So that's another thing that's taken a toll on me. But ultimately, at the end of the day, it's really this battle I'm having with the identity of being sick again, of like, oh, my gosh, I am a sickly person again.

I have this immune deficiency that the doctors have diagnosed me with, and I'm always going to be sick, and I'm never going to be able to get over this because nothing's working. And I've been taking herbal medicines, I've been, you know, taking homeopathic remedies, vitamins, everything I can think of that's not a prescription pill because I don't want to take meds again. And it took somebody that I really trust and really care about to be honest with me and say, maybe it's time you go see a doctor, Carrie, because you haven't been getting better.

Over the counter stuff isn't working. Maybe you actually have something and you need a prescription medication to get better. And people have mentioned this to me, and I normally just brush them off because I don't want to take meds, and I have a pride about it. And it took this person that I really trust being able to say that to me for me to go, okay, I have a pride about not being sick and not having that as my identity. And I really should look at that because it's kind of a blind spot, almost like when you come out of agreement with this identity of being sick.

But then I basically jumped to having an identity of pride about not being sick. So I had to drop my pride and I made a teladoc appointment and got some prescription meds. And I am so grateful because I'm like, yeah, meds were designed to help people in need, and right now I need medications, and that's okay, and it doesn't mean I'm weak, and it doesn't mean that I'm less than powerful, amazing, you know, self sufficient woman. But it really was somebody speaking out to that pride and pointing out a blind spot.

So I want to invite you today to think about, you probably have blind spots in your life, but who is it that can speak into those for you? Do you have someone that can kind of, like, speak truth and overcome the pride response that you're going to have back at them when they point out a blind spot? Because we all need people in our life like that. And I know I have this one really trusted individual that can do that for me, and I'm so grateful. But sometimes it needs to be a stranger. Sometimes it needs to be a coach.

Sometimes you need someone to be able to point out those blind spots because they don't know you that well, but that's what they're trained to do. And so I want to also invite you today to think about, man, I don't have anybody in my life like that, or I want another person in my life like that. That's what coaching is for. That's why we have coaches on Cadre to help you point out these blind spots. And I am the incredibly lucky person on Cadre that gets to oversee our coaching department, and I have a network of coaches that I can call up and say, okay, let's dig at it.

Let's go up my blind spots. And I want you to point things out. So if you don't have someone like that in your life or you want another person like that in your life, I want to invite you to sign up today to have a session with one of our coaches because that's what we specialize in, is helping you find those blind spots and identify those areas where you might have a little bit of pride with or defensiveness that's truly hindering you from having healing in a certain area of your life. So that's what I wanted to share with you guys today.

Thanks for tuning in.
