Sally Kohn: Here's a reminder to you throughout your week to not miss those moments and those opportunities to savor what's happening in this existing time. Kohn shows you some of her past journals. She says journaling is something that has helped her do that.

Hey, Cadre. Good morning. How's everybody doing? I hope that you all are having a good Monday. I took a moment. It's been a good day for me, but it's also been a long day already. It feels like I have a two and a half year old daughter. And we just had one of those mornings that was rough. Like, it was really rough. Lots of tears, lots of fighting, lots of on her end just kind of like stomping away and then me retreating and finding a moment to just pause and wait. And took me a moment to remember that it's just Monday.

But I hope you're having a good Monday. I'm happy to be here with all of you. You're not finding me in my kitchen this morning. I actually, you know, as summer is winding down, I decided I want a week of really easy recipes. Hi, Speak Wonder. Hi, Amarad. Thanks for joining. Happy morning. So anyway, so I have like, we're having salads and we're having crock pot meals and we're gonna eat at a farmer's market one night. So that's kind of the plan for my menu planning for the week. So I don't really have a bunch of prep this morning, which is kind of great.

But what I am sharing with you is another one of my rest rituals, which is I like to journal on Monday mornings and try to tell myself what I'm hoping to get out of the week. And this has actually been a skill that I've only done the last couple of years. And I did it all the time when I was in high school and college. And then I stopped and I picked it back up. And it's really helped manage my anxiety because I don't have to do 65 things in a day. The way that I plan out my week on pen and paper is just, what are the three things that I need to do in that day?

Or what are three reminders that I have for myself? And it really just helps me focus and not rush ahead or think to all the things I need to do next week or the things that I need to do even the next day. And I don't accomplish all of these things that I write down. They're a mix of fun things. Like, I've just started in online for the week. But, like, I'll look at my notes from last week, which include, let me just go to that. Like, my goal is to plant and water my real garden. Like, my real garden and my, like, outdoor garden.

That might be another chapter that we get to together. I'm not a gardener. I'm really trying. I live across the street from a woman who's master gardener and she's taken me under her wing. So that is why I need to plant and water my garden and my garden. So we're talking about savor. And I was thinking about this this weekend. Like, what are we, what are we going to talk about? How are we going to use our time this morning? And what's funny is as I was doing some planning and thinking about that, I was sort of missing the moments to savor around me.

So I was on a walk with my daughter and she brought her baby doll with and put the baby doll in the stroller. And so she was pushing her baby doll around and I was following her and I was thinking, what are we gonna talk about this morning? And I'm kind of like thinking in my head jotting some mental notes down. And as this is happening, she's, you know, taking the baby doll around in the stroller. And for a moment she takes the baby doll out of the stroller because she sees an airpl and she said, baby, look, an airplane.

And she has her baby wave at the airplane and she waves at the airplane. And I thought, okay, I will figure out what to talk about. But like, this is savoring. Like, I need to push away the list. I need to push away the things that I need to do tomorrow. And I need to learn, continue to learn. Because I think it is a journey to stay present and be present in that moment. So here's just a reminder to you throughout your week to not miss those moments and those opportunities to savor what's happening in this existing time.

I found that journaling is something that has helped me do that, whether it's even just like writing out notes for the week. I also wanted to show you some of my past journals because like I said, I've got this hobby. I've been doing this for a long time. So this was my journal when I was in the seventh grade. Ironically, it has like my favorite flowers on it. It's hydrangeas, one of my favorites. And I have some since I have some post its of things that I wrote when I was 14 because I reread my journals often and I actually learn a lot about myself and how maybe things have changed a lot.

I've changed a lot, but I still have. And that's the core. Like have some truths that I've always known. This one I think is from even further back because it's puppies. I think this is from when I was in sixth grade. Yep, sixth grade. And so lots of learnings in here, just like self discovery. This journal, which is one of my most prized possessions, is a journal that I got from my very best friend for my birthday. And she's still one of my best friends to this day. I just saw her in St. Paul, where I live in Minneapolis.

She was in St. Paul. And she wrote in here a bunch of different quotes and different mantras and things for me to remember. And they're very of the time, as a lot of them are from Grey's Anatomy, which was very popular when we were coming of age. But then there's some from Gandhi and an Irish blessing. And this is something that I go back to all the time to just stay present and stay focused. And then this last one is one of the most important journals that I have. This is a journal that I got from a friend when I navigated my first pregnancy loss, which we lost our pregnancy at 22 weeks four years ago.

And I got this journal from a friend. And what I decided to write was to write every day pieces of gratitude to myself. And so it had to be things that I'm grateful for that I have done, that I have navigated through. It could be gratitude to my body, it could be gratitude to my mind. And that's a practice that I actually need to go back to. When I think of myself in that time, I was deep in grief and just trying to hold on to some sliver of hope because for us during that time, we didn't know if we would be able to have another pregnancy.

And so there was just a lot of uncertainty, a lot of ambiguity and deep grief. A lot of deep grief. And I was feeling really sad and feeling really challenged to just keep moving forward. But having this practice of giving myself gratitude for the things that I had been through and the things that I would continue to move forward with was crucially important to me. So the theme of this, and what I hope maybe you can can leave with, is to find some time and space in your week to give yourself gratitude and to stay present with the moment and savor every little bit.

Okay, everybody, I hope you have a really wonderful week and an amazing Monday. Being here with all of you has made me much happier than I was walking into this after kind of a challenging morning. And so I thank you for your time and your presence, and I wish you a wonderful week. Bye.
