Hello Cadre folks. Happy Monday. Happy Monday. Give it just about one minute here for folks to join in. Not too long. Hoping you have a great Monday. Last Monday of January 2025, which is crazy to think about how quick this month has gone by. Hope you're having a good Monday. Hello. Speak. Wonder. Welcome. Happy Monday, Jules. Hi. Welcome, welcome. Give it 30 more seconds or so. Hope you're having a great Monday. I was just talking about crazy. That's already the Last Monday of January 2025, how quick this has gone.

Yeah, it's crazy. So let's get started, as we always do, with the three things of three. So you can either throw it in the comments or just reflect personally. But let's start first. What are three things that you're feeling right now? Could be emotions, could be sensations, could be kind of anything. What are you feeling? Hot. Cold. I'm cold. Cold up in Duluth, like always. A little sick right now. We'll talk about that in a little bit later. But what are three things that you're feeling emotionally or sensations?

Happy birthday. Speak. Wonder Thursday. Big day. Happy birthday. So maybe looking forward to that. So what I see three things we're feeling and then energetic, happy and loved. Great, good. Sounds like a great Monday, Jules. Happy to hear. And then what are three things? What are three intentions that we have for the rest of the day today? What about maybe some goals? Maybe something, you know, maybe something emotionally we want an attention for, you know, almost like a manifestation. What are three intentions that we have for the rest of the day?

And then lastly, what are three things you're grateful for to on this Monday here in January? What are three things you are grateful for? So you can throw it in the comments. Feeling cozy, bit sleepy. Contemplative. Good, good. Like how we're thinking about how we're contemplative. That's fun. That's a fun circle. Mm. Okay, so you can keep throwing that in the comments, we can come back to it later. But I want to jump into kind of some research that I found interesting. So I spoke a little bit ago about how I was feeling sick.

So I was interested what is current research on sickness while at work? And turns out there's a whole field of workplace psychology based on feeling sick at work. It's called presenteeism. And this is working while sick or injured. And this could be burnout. Some mental health related issues as well. And it's leading to reduced productivity. So it's working well. Really not at 100%. So. And the article that I am highlighting here is called the hidden costs of working while sick. It's by Miriella Mirageli and Gail Kinman, both professors out in the uk.

So the numbers and stuff are from the uk, but a lot of the research is done from all over the world that they talk about. So working while unwell or presenteeism as they call it could because it's like absenteeism but you're present. So it's like being there, but not this is thought to cause the UK economy almost twice as much as absenteeism. So being there while on well is almost twice as expensive in the UK economy as actually just not showing up. So in the presentee ism, the presenteeism cost is reported to be about 15 billion annually on just mental health related issues.

So issues like emotional tolls like burnout is thought to cost the UK economy about 15 billion annually. And this was this research was done about eight years ago, 2017. So that and I'm guessing this has even increased since then based on other things I've seen. So 15 billion annually on just mental health related issues alone. This doesn't include sickness like cold, flus and other issues. So what causes people to show up to work? Feeling unwell, high job demands, so feeling employees feeling pressured to meet deadlines, heavy workloads.

Also organization might have strict absence policies. So penalizing based on the number of sick days. People might just not have sick pay or sick days built in. There's also individual factors. So maybe some people feel a sense of responsibility, they feel guilty about not showing up. They may feel irreplaceable through their work, job insecurity. People might feel that if they don't show up they might lose their job as well as enjoyment of work. People just might enjoy the work so much that they show up even when they're sick.

Additionally, there's cultural factors as well. So maybe in the culture you're in they glorify kind of toughing it out, you know, taking sick as a weakness which is going to increase presenteeism. So like healthcare professionals often feel duty to prioritize patient care over their health. So those are all factors that lead into presenteeism. So what are the implications, what are the outcomes and the impacts of presenteeism we talked about to the economy but just on the individuals kind of, you know, as you would think health deterioration.

So you're not taking the time that your body needs. This increases can increase chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease or if you burnt out and you're still showing up to work, it's going to further increase that burnout and could even lead to more increased mental health issues. So nurses who they found nurses who work through illness face heightened risks of burnout and emotional exhaustion as they keep working through the day for the work they're getting reduced productivity. This is where I really thought it was interesting as employees who may function if they're showing up on well they show 50 to 70% of their capacity.

So if you're showing up sick or maybe burnt out, you're working at about 50 to 70% of your capacity. And this can lead to, you know, mistakes, errors and lapses in their work which is really relevant for healthcare and manufacturing jobs where safety for yourself and others is really important. They highlight one study that found that pharmacists who showed up presenteeism who showed up unwell increased medication errors when they were sick. So they were prescribing the wrong medicines to people.

They were filling the wrong bottles. So just think of the the risks there and then also yeah then the financial impacts where it was reported it was $15 billion on just the mental health related presenteeism in the UK annually is the is the estimate. So it doesn't include showing up while injured or you know, virus, sickness or cold flu, things like that. So they do offer some solutions and that's just for you taking the time that you need right away if you can. Because if you take it right away you could reduce that long term absenteeism where you can't show up to work because you're so sick or injured because you try to tough it out.

Additionally for managers and leaders it's role modeling taking time off when you need it or when people do say they need it to show that empathy, show that understanding. So I just thought it was interesting that there's a whole line of research on showing up to work while on well so that's kind of all I have. I'll come back to the three things of three jewels for intentions. Stay focused, positive and determined. I love it. Love it. Sounds like a productive and good afternoon and speak wonderful is grateful for Cadre so am I the grandchildren and for my mom recovering from a recent illness.

Well I'm glad that she is recovering. Hope she gets better every single day gets back to 100% and take takes the time that she needs. Thanks for joining. I wish you have a great rest of your Monday and great rest of your week. That is all I have so have a great rest of your day. Thanks for joining everyone. Bye.
