Hello doctor e here. Hope you are doing well. I am starting a four part series on leadership building blocks and this is the first part. So I'm going to talk about four pivotal things that I think are very integral to leadership. Leadership development and becoming a really effective, transformational, an impactful leader. The first is vulnerability. How you approach the margins and the fringes of your comfort zone is so significant. How do you think about challenging yourself, both on a personal level as well as an institutional organizational level?
How do you push the envelope? How do you look at and look for status quo signals or symbols? How do you start to think about what you've done and how you've done up to a particular point, and then how do you move beyond that and what does it look like to stretch yourself? That's how I define vulnerability and that's why I think vulnerability is key. You have to begin to interrogate and ask yourself, what is it that I'm used to, what is it that I'm comfortable with and how do I stretch myself beyond those kinds of things.
One of the helpful practices that I've learned to do is begin to examine my own habits, practices in ways of ease as well as in ways of tension. When the rubber hits the road, or as I like to say, when s*** hits the fan, what do you tend to fall back on? What is your default? And as you begin to identify some of those default dynamics, how do you start to get away from them? How do you start to shift or pivot from them and do things differently? Asking yourself that question to me begins with understanding and getting to a point of vulnerability in your responses and in your actions.
So how do you start to ask yourself all of those pivotal point markers of where you are vulnerable or how to be vulnerable, and what does that look like? Beginning with that is very helpful. I am going to talk about three other building blocks in the next several series of videos. But remember, vulnerability is the place to start. How do you start to ask yourself all of those kinds of questions, revealing questions that starts to shed light on what you do, why you do it, and then how you can pivot and move away from it.
Stay tuned for the next three. It.
