How do you dig deep and fund yourself during the struggle that is life??
My timberwolves went to the game last night, down three, rip. All I kept telling everybody is the only thing that matters is if we win game five in Denver. So all that's going to matter is game seven. We might be the first team ever to come back from three rips.
Emma Watson: Today, I'm focusing on books that have changed my life. I'm going to give you one sentence with each one of the books. If you're not a well rounded individual, she says, you miss out on opportunities.
CNN's Jarrett Bellini takes a look at some of the books that have changed his life. The books include Conquering the impossible by Mike Horn and A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. Bellini: Are you lying to yourself every day? Can you find ways to work around burnout?
Set boundaries, find peace. A guide to reclaiming yourself. I've always struggled with boundaries. And so, again, it's like, am I living into it? It just keeps getting better.
Big t, small t, it's still trauma. How you go through that trauma and how you deal with that trauma is the same. But everybody's version of trauma is different. And we have to acknowledge every single person's trauma.
Dare: Why we sleep by Matthew Walker is an incredible book. Find a new way to end anxiety and panic attacks. The number one thing is going back to is celery juice. Once you lose on your sleep, you can never catch up.
Next one untamed by Glennon Doyle. One of my biggest takeaways is learning feminism. From Kobe Bryant, mamba mentality. Finding balance in an imbalanced world is. Has been hugely critical in my life to find that balance.
How to be an anti racist by Mister Kendi. Dope sick is absolutely incredible. We have a major, major epidemic going on in our country right now. I would encourage you to read, dope sick to.
The new Jim Crow is mass incarceration and the age of color blindness. Hack your anxiety by Alicia Clark. Warrior nation is a book about the Ojibwe tribe. All of this is education and learning for a better, well rounded you.
So yes, I rattled off a lot today with all those books but I wanted to share some of my faves. Hope you all have an amazing week. We have a phenomenal week of live stream schedules. Be on the lookout for another post that's going to be dropping the next 48 hours.
It's Monday. Here we go. It's Monday. I have my smoothie, which is amazing. I have my decaf coffee, and we're gonna come in hot today. I can't wait. My timberwolves went to the game last night, down three, rip. All I kept telling everybody is the only thing that matters is if we win game five in Denver. So we already got game four at home. We won that one. So it's three one. Can we win? Can we win out in Denver? Let's go, wolf nation. The answer is yes, and we will. And then we'll roll into, you know, game six at home.
That's easy. So all that's going to matter is game seven. So we might be the first team ever to come back from three rips. So watch out, t world nation. It was a late night. I loved it. It was a raucous crowd. Unbelievable energy. It's good stuff, right? But where I'm going today is this. Well, it's just a. It's just a beautiful, beautiful day in Minnesota. The birds are chirping. It's amazing. I don't know how you could possibly want a better Monday or how to kick off to a better Monday, but what I.
What I want to share is this, you know, through this journey of, of life over 42 years, for me, you know, I've had to find different places that have affected me. You know, it could be a podcast, it could be a book. It could be a personal relationship. It could be a friendship. It could be a variety of different things where I've learned stuff from. It could be mentors. Right? But today, I'm focusing on books. I have some books that have changed my life, and I'm going to give you one sentence with each one of the books, okay?
So you have to bear with me. There's hundreds and hundreds of other books I love, right? There's a lot of them. But with these books, I just picked out my favorites, and I'm gonna share one sentence that I believe is gonna be important. Was important for me. It was a value proposition for me or what I took from it. But I think each and every one of you has an opportunity to do the same. Okay? So without further ado, I'm going to start dropping bombs one after another on you with these books and what I took from it.
And I hope that, number one, that you either write a couple of these down. I know, Carrie, you love the books. Carries a book fiend just like I am. Love, love my books. Em orders books just around the clock, non stop. Got her audible going. I think I've read d*** near every single business strategy book that you can possibly find. And, yeah, so in, you know, self development, self growth, you, you name it. So, all right, here we go. Some of these books, when it comes to self growth, you might ask yourself, like, what does that really have to do with it?
And I firmly believe, my heart of hearts, if you're not a well rounded individual, you know, especially in leadership or in life, I think you miss. There's this old adage, I know a little bit about something and a whole lot about nothing. And I think that can carry you with you so much in life, whether it's a dinner at a wedding, whether it's a dinner at a wedding and somebody brings up something about finance and stocks. Okay, are you just going to hold mute for the next 40 minutes while that conversation goes on?
Or if somebody talks about turtles down in the Caribbean and you have no idea that only x amount of all of those that are born that are shelled, you always just have this opportunity to be participating in conversation because you're well read. Right, here we go. I'm going to drop the bombs one after another. There's a few of them. I talked about this one already. Conquering the impossible by Mike Horn. He takes a. So I'm gonna do one sentence for each book. Conquering the impossible. From my corn, I found that I have so much more to offer in this world.
I can dig so much deeper. And he proved this through his journey around the Arctic Circle. And I know that I can go deeper in this life, and I will. And so I'm not saying I'm going to be an expedition individual in the next day or two, but I know I can go deeper. Conquering the impossible. Mike Horne, read it. A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. This is one of the most fascinating self discovery books that I've read that is kind of like hit on some of the biases that I may have had about myself, maybe how I was raised, how I grew up, you know, in far small town Hutchinson, Minnesota, to, you know, growing up in, you know, in Brooklyn, immigrants, etc.
Of what that looks like. So I wouldn't encourage you to read this and reflect on your life. So again, a tree grows in Brooklyn. Oh, boy. The book that has forever changed my life can't hurt me by David Goggins. If you have not read this book, I always say they should teach goggins at school. They should literally just have a curriculum that talks about teaching goggins, right? And becoming uncomfortable living in your 40%, finding ways to drown out the noise of life. Right? Who are you going to show up as?
Are you lying to yourself every day? Do you have your things on your mirror that you write for yourself? Like, what? Who are you? At the end of the day, that's basically what it breaks down. Like, who in the world are you? And this book right here has forever changed my life. If you have not read it, please do and please do immediately. As far as some of the self deprecating nature of David Goggins on his journey, I'm not encouraging you, if you're overweight, to call yourself fat. That's. That's not what I'm saying.
But I think there's a reality to where we are all in this world. Are we lying to ourselves? Okay, please, please, please. Oh, boy. I am just dropping another bomb on you. Burnout, burnout, burnout, burnout, burnout. The secret to unlocking the stress cycle by my dear friend Emily Ngoski. Burnout, burnout, burnout, burnout, burnout. It is a term and a word used around the clock right now about burnout, but nobody is really addressing how can I actually work around burnout? Because I'm telling you, like, personally, four, five, six years ago, like, was I riding a line of burnout?
I was riding the line of burnout every day. Am I producing, and are my outcomes going actually even farther today than they were six, seven years ago in those burnouts? Absolutely. I'm exponentially pushing out more today than I did six years ago. Right. So again, I exponentially am pushing out more than I did six years ago. Was I more burned out six years ago? 100%. Hundred percent. Than where I am now. But you have to learn ways in which you can absolutely find your cycle patterns. So burnout doesn't exist in your life.
And junk food junkie, could you please make a list? You better believe it. I'm actually going to take a picture, and I'll have all the books and all of the pictures right there for you, so you can have every one of the books available for you. And, yes, Kerry, yes, I will post in the community. Feed 110%. Alec, we're always going to get going. Come on, Kosh. Nedra's nuggets. Get off you. Set boundaries, find peace. Set boundaries, find peace. A guide to reclaiming yourself. You know, my wife read this, handed it over to me.
I've always struggled with boundaries. I've always have, like, just kept going and going. Sometimes it's work. Sometimes relationships, sometimes it's XYz. Right. No matter what it is, you know, I have got to do a better job in my life. Boundaries. And so, again, it's like, am I living into it? And the answer is half heartedly, I have to do a much better job. And that's with any book, any self help book you read, any book that's changed your life. Like, am I really living it? And so I would say, set boundaries, find pieces.
Something that I loved reading. I found so much good out of it. I just need to put more in practice. Okay. And I'm sure a lot of people would say the same, but regardless, unbelievable book. It just keeps getting better. It keeps getting better. The body keeps the score. The body keeps the score. Brain, mind, body, and the healing of trauma by Bessel van DER Walk. Okay, so here's the deal. What I took away from this was this. And you've heard me say this before, I believe even on some of my lives, big t, small t, it's still trauma.
How you define a big tree and how somebody else defines a big t doesn't matter. It's still trauma. How you go through that trauma and how you deal with that trauma and how the brain deals with the trauma is the same. But everybody's version of trauma is different. And we have to acknowledge every single person's trauma. Could be sexual assault. It could be a tough conversation that you had with the teacher when you were twelve. It's still trauma, folks. Okay? Being bullied could still be significant trauma that someone deals with 25 years later being laughed at on a school bus.
Could be trauma somebody faces with. It's still tea. Never forget that. Unbelievable book. All right, if you don't know me, here you go. Anxiety 101. That's me. Generalized anxiety disorder. All things coming up for me in a little bit here are really, really important because I struggle with it. I've struggled with anxiety all my life. I've struggled with anxiety all my life. And finding ways to continue to become my best self, even today at 42, is still critical. Dare a new way to end anxiety and panic attacks.
This book is outstanding. My biggest takeaway? No one's ever died from an anxiety. Nobody's ever died from anxiety ever. Nobody's ever died from a panic attack. It will come, it will go. It will come and go. You might have to face the next one, you might have to go up another mountain, but nobody ever has died from an anxiety or panic attack, period. That's the truth. Lot, a lot, a lot of press lately on sleep. A lot of press on sleep. I'm sure everybody's wondering, oh, do I have my sleep watch on?
Is my readiness score? How am I waking up? What does it look like? If you haven't read this, get on it. Why we sleep? Why we sleep by Matthew Walker. You are going to learn so much in this book. You will learn so much. It's incredible. Absolutely incredible book. One of my biggest takeaways from the book is once you lose, you can never catch up. Once you lose on your sleep, you can never catch up. Right. So last night I got home late, right? I got home super late from the game. Tried to get to bed as soon as I possibly can.
I'm a creature of habit. I still wake up at the same time I usually do. Lack of sleep. How am I going to gain it? You can't just roll 3 hours into the next night and you get it back. Doesn't happen like that. So when you start your sleep pattern, you start your sleep schedule. Say, I need to exponentially grow. Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow, today, tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow. Why we sleep. Get on it. Anxious kids, anxious parents. Anxious kids, anxious parents. If you, if your family, if anybody you know that is younger than you, older than you that struggles with anxiety, it's so important to know why they deal with it, what happens, how to regulate it, how to work with somebody, how to talk to them.
H***, employees, people you work with, coworkers, colleagues, partners, friends, you name it. If you don't know how to handle the most basic things that people deal with, whether it's anxiety, panic attacks, stress, you name it. I mean, the reality is, like, you gotta ask yourself, like, how can I show up as a better friend? How can I lean into this? And if you haven't, if you haven't done the work, and if you haven't read the stuff, good luck. Good luck. Oh, my gosh. Oh, it gets better. It gets better.
This is single handedly one of my most favorite things that I've ever read. You can just see the smile on my face. It's just so palpable. The medical medium. The medical medium. You probably saw a lot of celebrities posting about this or a lot of celebrities that are talking more about the medical medium. Book and celery juice and all the things. My one sentence, if you aren't drinking celery juice, you are missing out on this life. If you are not drinking celery juice, it is a superpower, an absolute superpower.
Every single one of these things that people are dealing with could be inflammation. It could be this, could be that. Whatever. Doesn't matter. Sleep. The number one thing is going back to is celery juice. Are you taking in the celery juice? And I'm sorry about that burp with my smoothie here. I apologize about that, guys. We're just getting started. We're just getting started. Next one untamed by Glennon Doyle. Okay. She wrote Love warrior as well. My wife is a very much a self proclaimed Glennon Doyle fan.
She loves Abby and Glennon and had me read some of these books. And my biggest takeaway is, are you living your truth? Are you living into your truth? And do you know who you are? And how would you define your identity? Who are you? How do you identify? And for me, one of my biggest takeaways is learning feminism. Like, what really is feminism? What truly, how does feminism show up and why it's important. Yes, that's right. Junk food junkie. I know. Jack Black, critics. Celery juice. Yeah. I mean, celery juice is single handedly one of the greatest things that you can put in your body.
It's unbelievable. But back to Glennon Doyle. I've had to learn a lot about what feminism is and what it isn't. And I believe it's super, super powerful, especially men and males, to know, like, how it shows up, what it means, and how it's important to navigate those conversations, those waters together from very strong, strong women who we love. Right? Strong women don't show up as. Cause this is what happens sometimes. Strong women shows up. Men are powerful. Women are b******. And the reality is women are powerful.
Women are powerful. Men are powerful. Nobody shows up as a complainer. Nobody shows up as this. And sometimes men in the roles that they've had for years and years and years have put to push different things. But no matter what, untamed Glennon Doyle read it. One of the best to ever play. One of the best to ever play the game. Kobe Bryant, mamba mentality. This. This is. This is just a fascinating book. And what I. My major takeaway from. From Kobe is the switch. What is the mamba mentality? Right?
Leaves being a father. Leaves. Leaves being a husband. Leaves, shows up to the gym, and he turns off, on and off the light switch. Light switch turns on. It's go time. It is absolutely go time. Game turns on. It's go time. Don't mess with him. Don't do anything with like, he is. He is locked in. He's in a cage, and he will absolutely take your head off. Because he's the most competitive human being, probably outside of Michael Jordan. But so the mamba mentality is important. Definitely has affected me, affected me in business, affected me in life, affect me in friendships.
Whoo. It keeps getting better. Again, dopamination. Dopamine. Why does your brain do what it does? And why does it need things when it needs them? P***, gambling, sex, alcohol, drugs, likes. We're a. We're a society that's just in love with likes for some strange reason unknown to man. But regardless, um, of dopamination and finding balance in an imbalanced world is. Has been hugely critical in my life to find that balance. Dopamine nation, I've learned so much from it. There's stories that I just continue to love to share.
But, you know, one of the stories that are major takeaways of mine is, um, you know, there's. I think it's like page 100 some in the book, and I think it's like 104. And there's a story where an individual comes and he's going to be speaking at a conference, and he looks over at somebody else and he says, get ready, they're all about to cry, right? Because he's had this preconceived notion of the dopamine that he wants to take in from the audience, almost like he said. The author called it p*** disclosure.
Right? Like, I'm going to tell you my story, and I'm expecting you to feel away. Crazy stuff. Absolutely crazy stuff. Next one, next one, next one, next one. How to be an anti racist by Mister Kendi. Okay? I am a white male, a very, very white male from Minnesota that has grown up in very, very little diversity. And to understand my biases, to dig deep about who I am and how I'm treating people and how to acknowledge. It's not saying you're racist by being white, it's talking about how to be an anti racist.
Right? And so, you know, racism is a big, big, big word that I don't want to dive into too much right now, but I'm just, you know, articulating the fact that, you know, understanding how we grew up, how we were raised, understanding your power, your privilege, etcetera, or to the flip side of the coin, lack thereof. So again, it's a phenomenal, phenomenal book. We have a major, major epidemic going on in our country right now. Sure, there was the pandemic. Now there's an epidemic, and a lot of individuals don't know even why it happened.
So I would encourage you to read, dope sick to. There is a series, I gosh, I can't remember if it's showtime or HBO. Don't quote me on that. Or, h***, even Hulu or Netflix. But the book itself is so much better than the series, and I would encourage you to read it so you really understand the magna, the magnitude of what happened and how the epidemic actually came about. So please take the time to dig in and read that book. Dope sick is absolutely incredible. If you've been listening to anything I've said over the last 18 months, twelve months, whatever, it's been here on Cadre of going live, you're going to hear me talk a lot about the growth mindset.
A lot of it comes from this book, the growth Mindset playbook by Annie Brock. Okay. This one here, it talks about the growth mindset. And my wife handed this to me, and it's all about a teacher's guide to promoting student success. They should change this to a life's guide to promoting life success. It is an outstanding book that has changed my life. The growth mindset. What words to use, what words not to use, how to show up. Can't, won't, knows, right? Yes, those are good in boundaries, but they aren't good in growth, right?
So you got to find a way to, like, shut off your brain to others opinions, shut off your brain to others ideas so you can learn from them and identify ways in which you could keep moving forward. If I've had a dollar for every time someone said, I can't over the last 40 years of my life versus maybe should I. Should I give that a try? Right. Next one. Hack your anxiety. Hack your anxiety. This one is so good by Alicia Clark. Again, I've already talked about my anxiety and why it's so important to me and why this book.
This is an incredibly helpful resource for anybody who struggles with anxiety. Okay. Dig in. Read it when you get a chance. My last two. My last two, they kind of go hand in hand here. So this one is the warrior. Warrior nation, and it's a book about the Ojibwe tribe, just to learn about their history, the native american tribes, especially in Minnesota, what they've been through, in their words, not ours, right? Because usually we're the ones who write all the text. And what I mean by us is white individuals.
But to hear from an individual that has native american blood and their vantage and their viewpoint. So again, this is called warrior nation. I love it. Last but not least, the new Jim Crow. The new Jim Crow. It's the mass incarceration and the age of color blindness. I've been alive for 42 years. And all data, all stats suggest, you know, that my son, sons, and daughter have a 300% less chance to become incarcerated than any black student that is in our schools today. So think about it like this.
For every, you know, for all the kids that show up, you know, at schools today, there could be, you know, three class of 100, let's call it, right? For every x number of african american students that potentially could end up being incarcerated, that number would be one third because they're white. And colorblindness is real. Your biases are real. And I would encourage you to read the new Jim Crow to educate yourself. And so all of this is education and learning for a better, well rounded you. Right?
For a better, well rounded you, I will take a picture of this. I will share this with you. But again, there's two different types of people, in my humble opinion on this planet. There's those individuals that take advantage of those resources and those that don't. And your resources are available for you. Private life, public libraries, all the things. But will you read it? And we implement them into action in your life, right? It's like, I hear all these people listening to podcasts and reading their books and doing all these other things, but, you know, do you.
Do you live it? Do you live it? Do you breathe it? Do you find ways to integrate it into your life? Do you find ways, like, can't hurt me, where Goggins says things like, you know, don't let others affect you. Don't let others, you know, opinions of you affect you. Don't let it. Don't their feelings, you know, affect you? And the reality is, like, I had that situation actually on. On Saturday happen to me, right, where somebody sent me, you know, a blind message on LinkedIn that was just. It was.
It was hurtful. It was insanely hurtful. And I couldn't believe somebody would use, like, that vulgar tone and all those other things, but it happened. Did. Did it affect me? Absolutely not. Absolutely. 100%. No. I sent him a message back and it said, it sounds like you need to talk to somebody, you know, hurt people. Hurt people. And here's my cell phone number, so if there's anything I can ever do for you, please let me know. Right. And so the reality is, is those individuals that are. Are sending those messages in this world anyhow, you know, are probably struggling, and that's just the truth.
So give them. Give them a hand. Help them out. You know, those. Those bullies you always got to look at the other end of this other end of the stick and usually they're just the ones hurting the most. So at any rate I hope that that list and lineup of books was maybe there's one or two that you want to take in and try and try to read and see if it's going to be helpful or beneficial to you in your life but those are some of my favorites. I have hundreds and hundreds of more. So yes, I rattled off a lot today with all those books but I wanted to share some of my faves.
Hope you all have an amazing week. We have a phenomenal week of live stream schedules. We're coming up to the end of April already which is unbelievable. We have our May Cadre commitments coming. Be on the lookout for another post that's going to be dropping the next 48 hours. So enjoy that read and take care of. You all have the best week ever. Let's roll. Bye.
