Autism Parenting Wins: Starting Again Without Pressure

SPShannan Paul

January has a lot of opinions about how we’re supposed to feel by now. Reset. Refreshed. Motivated. Clear. And as a parent, especially a caregiver, I just don’t experience life that way. I’m constantly starting again. Restarting mornings after tough nights. Restarting routines when something stops working. Restarting expectations when my kid or I need something different than we did last week. For a long time, I treated restarting as failure. Like if I had to try again, it meant I didn’t plan well enough or push hard enough the first time. I don’t believe that anymore. Beginning again is information. It’s data. It’s feedback from real life. It’s choosing adjustment over shame. January didn’t require a big reinvention for us. It required honesty. Honesty about energy levels. Honesty about what’s sustainable. Honesty about the fact that caregiving rarely follows a clean timeline. So if this month didn’t go the way you pictured, you didn’t miss your chance. You’re not late. You’re not behind. You’re not doing it wrong. You’re just starting again without pressure. And in parenting, that’s not just normal. It’s a win. What’s something you’ve had to restart recently, without judging yourself for it?

  1. 0:00As a parent, I feel like I'm constantly beginning again

It's the end of January. As a parent, especially a caregiver, I feel like I'm constantly beginning again. If January didn't work for you, you didn't miss anything. We're just starting again without the pressure this time.

It's the end of January. Hooray. I guess. And if you were supposed to feel reset by now, you know, organized, motivated, or magically figured out same. You know what? I do not. And as a parent, especially a caregiver, I feel like I'm constantly beginning again. I'm restarting mornings. I'm restarting plans, I'm restarting expectations, sometimes restarting the same conversation before my first cup of tea. And somewhere along the line, we decided that restarting means we failed. But I don't buy that anymore.

I think that beginning again means that you're paying attention. It means that you're adjusting instead of forcing something that isn't working for you. And it means that you're choosing real life or the version that looked good in your head. So if January didn't work for you, you didn't miss anything. You're not behind. We're not late. We're just starting again without the pressure this time. And that's a beautiful thing. So what's something you've had to restart lately, but this time without judging yourself for it?
