  1. 0:00Sports psychology is rooted in the idea of performance and how to perform consistently

Sports psychology and the mental skills that I teach and love can apply to anybody, including parents. Parenting in itself is a performance. I promise not to preach at you what the ideal parenting style looks like. All I want to do is give y'all some practical tips.

I know we got a lot of parents here on Cadre. I'm happy that you're part of this community, on this platform, and you have a big role in raising the next generation. That being said, parenting can be very hard. And as a mental performance coach, I mainly train the minds of athletes, soldiers, and performers. But sports psychology and the mental skills that I teach and love can apply to anybody, including parents. A lot of sports psychology is rooted in the idea of performance and how to perform at your best and do it consistently.

Parenting in itself is a performance. Look at you. You're a performer and you didn't even know it. When I think of the word performance, it comes down to a lot of different things. It's sometimes where there's something at stake, carries consequences, times where you want your head to be in the game, and you might feel some pressure to perform well, judging from that, parenting checks all those boxes. So, again, you are a performer. I will admit that I am not a parent yet. I'm only 27. So maybe once I'm more financially secure, whatever that means, then I will start to think more about having children with my fiance.

But. But I have worked with kids a lot and parents in a lot of different jobs. For example, between college and grad school, I worked for a year in lacrosse, Wisconsin, where I went to school. Go lacrosse. And I worked as a parent educator at a counseling company where I worked with parents. A lot of parents in rough situations, low socioeconomic backgrounds, and many other situations where I taught them to learn the fundamentals of what it looks like to be a parent and youth development and things of that nature.

Plus, plus, I cannot wait to be a dad one day. And some of you might be thinking, be careful what you wish for, Garrett. And I recognize that. All that being said, I promise not to preach at you what the ideal parenting style looks like. All I want to do in these sports psychology parenting videos is to give y'all some practical tips for how to incorporate some mental skills that I would teach athletes and performers to use. I'll make a bunch of different videos with a bunch of different topics, so let me know in the comments what topics you're interested in, and I'd be happy to make a whole video about whatever you're curious about.

This is a topic I'm highly passionate about, and I can't wait to be part of your parenting journey. And I guarantee you'll learn at least a thing or two from watching this series.
