  1. 0:00Rachel Havocost shares three tips for managing depression

Rachel Havocost is a writer and mental health advocate. Has been struggling with depression for the last month. She shares three things she does to bring herself back to baseline. Also shares other tips for managing depression as we enter winter months.

Three things I do when I'm struggling with depression hi, my name is Rachel Havocost. I am a writer and mental health advocate and I just want to help one person feel less alone. So that means sharing stories or wisdom or tools. I've learned along the way with my mental health in hopes that it might help you as well. So I have been struggling with some depression for the last month or so, and in an effort to try and bring myself back to baseline and find some stability, I am going back to basics.

So going back to basics is something I learned when I was in eating disorder treatment. And it's all about, uh, not reinventing the wheel when it comes to our day to day practice or day to day routine, and rather focusing on the most basic things. So that's things like basic hygiene, taking a shower and brushing my teeth. Teen consistent meals. No need to try and make a new recipe and focus on having meals that are consistent and simple. Doing things like resting when you're tired and also moving when you have even just the slightest amount of energy.

So it doesn't need to be a 30 minutes run, it can just be a ten minute walk. It doesn't have to be the best night of sleep you've ever had. It can just be. I've put myself in bed at ten, trying to just focus mostly on our basic needs and the bare minimum, just to bring ourselves into some kind of routine and baseline. I hope this was helpful and I will share other tips that I have for managing depression, especially as we enter into the winter months. And seasonal depression is often something that a lot of folks deal with this time of year.

So I hope to share more tips and I hope that they are helpful for you. See you next time.
