We are always reminded that to be successful, we need to make "to-do" lists. However, this can sometimes cause us to only focus on accomplishing tasks and we forget how "to-be." In this video, Dr. Carrie explains the concept of a "to-be" list and why it's important to make one.
I am one of those people that absolutely loves to do lists. It keeps me organized. I also love putting check marks or crossing things off. Sometimes we get so caught up in this mindset of just doing. Some days don't have to look like that.
So I want you to think about what it would be like to make a list called to be like. Come up with your list to do and to be and see which one's longer. See which one brings you more fulfillment and joy.
Who here likes to do lists? I am one of those people that absolutely loves to do lists. It keeps me organized. I sometimes use post it notes, sometimes use a whiteboard. I just got a new tool online that I use and it just keeps me organized. It is the only way I get through my day because otherwise I think, gosh, I've got a lot of stuff to get done and I just don't even know where to start. So I break it down into tasks. It's bite sized. It's easy. I also love putting check marks or crossing things off.
That's just so satisfying at the end of the day to know that I've accomplished these things. And I was reflecting on this the other day because I've been this way since I was little. Like having to do lists. And a lot of us get through life this way, right? It helps us stay organized, and it's encouraged, especially to be productive. And I was reflecting on this when I said the other day, gosh, I didn't accomplish anything. And to me, that meant I didn't accomplish anything on my to do list. But when what I I did accomplish was being just being for the day, I spent some time with friends, I went and served at my church.
And it made me reflect on this mentality that I have, which is so wrapped up in my to do list of needing to perform and accomplish every single day. And I'm not to say that that's a bad thing because I get a lot done and I can be really productive and execute a lot of things. But sometimes we get so caught up in this mindset of just doing, just doing, doing, doing, and just grinding and, you know, making sure that you're accomplishing all the things. And then when we have a day when we don't accomplish it, it challenges our mentality because we're stuck in kind of this performance mindset that if I didn't check anything off my to do list today that it wasn't a worthwhile day, when in reality, some days don't have to look like that, some days can be more about being.
So I want you to think about what it would be like to make a list called to be like. You have your to do, and you also have your to be like, what are my things today that I want to just be present for? Be involved in? Just focus on being the best version of myself that I can be. And maybe that means showing up and going walk with a friend. Maybe that means, you know, sitting on your couch and doing nothing because you just really want to honor yourself and your need for rest right now and and maybe this is a day that you're taking off.
So make your list, make your to do and make your to be and see which one's longer, see which one brings you more fulfillment and joy. Because I know that I love to check things off but then sometimes I get so stuck in the grind of checking things off and getting things done and my to do list becomes so long that I forget how to just be present. I forget how to just be there with my family, be there with my friends, just be away from my phone, right, to just be, be joyful, be happy, be content with my life.
So try that. Come up with your list to do and to be and I would love to hear how you guys do with this and just what challenges maybe you face and we can all explore this together. Thanks for tuning in today. God bless.
