Dr. Leslie: I'm trying to be intentional with who I want to connect with this year. She says offering a time helps her stay accountable to reaching out to friends and family. Leslie says it is so heartwarming to connect over coffee or at a nice restaurant.
Hey, Cadre. Hold on. I'm trying to get this together. It's me, Dr. D. Guess what? Once again, my cup is empty. But it's because I had some really great sessions this morning, and I just didn't have time to refill my cup. So I came here to refill my cup with you guys. So if you don't know me, I am Dr. Leslie. I am located in. In, I would say the St. Louis region, but I'm in Illinois, and I am a relationship therapist. And so in this space, I talk about all things relationships. And so today, I am just going to share some.
Some insights I've been gaining about myself when it comes to relationships with friends and some family, too. So I have tried to be more intentional this year. Hello there. I'm trying to be intentional with who I want to connect with this year because I have been so busy, I would say, the last two years, where I've missed certain things. Let me go back. I've probably been busy since I was in my PhD program. So that was probably five years ago now maybe six. So I feel like I missed a lot with. When it comes to the people that are close to me, like missing birthdays, missing graduations.
And it was a huge sacrifice I had to make to get to where I am today. But the sacrifice, and then I keep pushing back the time to connect with them. Does that ever happen to you? Right. So this year I want to change that. So I am making a point to reach out to people specifically and say, hey, we haven't hung out in a while. When are you available? I'm available these dates. And I found that that's what works better, is if I tell someone I'm available at this day, this time. Pick a time, right? What works for you?
Because if I allow them to say, oh, let me check my calendar, I'm available this time? Well, my schedule might not be open, and so I never really get back to it. So me offering a time helps me stay accountable to me reaching out to them and connecting with them. So I want to know, which friend are you? Are you the friend that is always reaching out and asking for connection and maybe saying, hey, girl, let's get together and. Or are you the friend that's like, yeah, we should do that? And then you never schedule the time with that person.
Which one do you show up as typically? And maybe it differs depending on who's asking you to hang out. Maybe it's, you know, the type of relationship you have with that person, whether it might be a Coworker. Because that's happened to me too. So there are a lot of co workers I've had in the past that I felt really connected to and that I wanted to maintain a connection with. And we always say, like, when someone leaves a job, like, keep in touch. Right? And you mean it. It'. Heartfelt. But then it never happens.
So let's put a stop to that in 2026. Let's be intentional with maintaining connection. So your tip for the day is to offer the time that you're available, give a few options, right? And then keep nudging at that person like, hey, we said that we were gonna get together. Let's put this on the calendar, and then you gotta show up. Okay. I have found that it is so heartwarming to connect with people over coffee, of course. Come on now. Over coffee or at a nice restaurant or just out, you know, taking a walk together, where you're intentional about just spending time with each other in a space that's convenient for both of you.
And the reason why I said that's really heartwarming is because it's planned and it's something that you decided to do, they decided to do. And you show up for each other, and you. You hold that commitment to each other and that a lot, because we are living in this space right now. And you guys probably noticed, it's that so many people are so into themselves where they're like, oh, that doesn't work for me. I'm not going to do that. I'm protecting my peace, that it doesn't feel good. I'm not going to do that.
And so we put up these. We think they're boundaries, but they're really barriers. Sometimes they're barriers to connection when we're focused on just ourselves. So how can you show up for yourself with the desire for connection, but show for the other person, too, who actually needs your connection to. Okay, that's all I got. Now, if that resonates with you, drop a coffee mug emoji in the chat for me. If you're watching the replay, let me know where you're listening from, where you're tuning into them from.
Because I like to know where you're located because I think this is interesting messages that we can take around the world. And I don't know, are there people around the world tuning into Cadre? I don't know. I know there's people in the U. S, but are we global yet? Let's make it happen, y'. All. So again, I'm in the Midwest. I'm in Illinois, but I'm right outside of St. Louis. Right on for Missouri. But I like to travel, so I would love to connect with people anywhere. Okay. So thank you for coming to my coffee chat.
I will be back here next Tuesday, same time, same place, hopefully with a cup of coffee. But you guys have a wonderful day. It was nice to talk to you. Bye.
