Autism Parenting Wins: Navigating the Icy Roads Anyway

SPShannan Paul

If you’ve driven anywhere in Minnesota lately, you know the roads are… a lot. Snow, rain, ice, and those bumpy patches that make you slow down even when you’re already running late. It’s not the smoothest ride, but it’s manageable if you’re paying attention. That’s how this season of parenting feels to me. The road I’m traveling with my kid isn’t always easy. There are moments where I have to slow way down, give us more time, and be extra careful navigating things that didn’t used to feel so slippery. Here’s what I’m learning: The road doesn’t have to be smooth for us to make progress. We’re figuring out how to drive this stretch. Some days cautiously. Some days confidently. Some days just proud we didn’t spin out. It may not look like the drive I imagined, but it’s one we’re learning how to navigate safely. And lately, that feels like growth. What are some of the bumps you’re navigating on your roads right now?

  1. 0:00The road I'm traveling with my kiddo isn't always smooth

The road I'm traveling with my kiddo isn't always smooth. There are bumps, some slick spots. And here's the thing I keep reminding myself we are getting there. Not fast, definitely not perfect, but safely and together.

Lately, the roads here in Minnesota have been a mess. Snowy, rainy, icy. That weird half frozen, half slush situation in your driveway where it looks fine until you take one wrong step and then suddenly you're doing some weird dance that you didn't sign up for. And that feels like a pretty good metaphor for my life right now. The road I'm traveling with my kiddo isn't always smooth. There are bumps, some slick spots. There are days when you have to slow way down, grip the wheel a little tighter, and give ourselves extra time to get where we're going.

And here's the thing I keep reminding myself we are getting there. Certainly not fast, definitely not perfect, but safely and together. So some days that means taking the long way. And some days that means pausing before a tricky turn. And some days it just means acknowledging, yep, that road is icy and moving carefully instead of pretending that it's not. The road doesn't have to look smooth to still be navigable. And progress doesn't have to feel easy to still be real. So right now, we're figuring out how to drive this stretch, and that counts.

So what's a little bump that you might be navigating right now in your road?
