Autism Parenting Tips: The Family Feedback Loop

SPShannan Paul

Sometimes it feels like my son and I are just bouncing emotions back and forth until we hit that mic-too-close-to-the-speaker moment. 😬💥 Lately I’ve been learning to pause, breathe, and turn the volume down before the feedback takes over. Empathy’s a beautiful thing, it just needs a little volume control. 💙 Do you and your kid ever feed off each other’s energy like this? How do you hit “reset”?

  1. 0:00Empathy is a gift, but it definitely needs volume control

Sometimes our household is basically one big emotional echo chamber. If I'm anxious, he's anxious, and if he's overwhelmed, now I'm overwhelmed. When our emotions start bouncing off each other, it could turn into screeching. What helps you reset when emotions get way too loud?

I'm an empath, and I've known that for a while. But now I'm starting to believe that my son is one too. Which means that sometimes our household is basically one big emotional echo chamber where if I'm anxious, he's anxious, and if he's overwhelmed, now I'm overwhelmed. So we're like this little family feedback loop, and when our emotions start bouncing off each other, it could turn into that awful sound you get when you hold a microphone too close to a speaker. You know, like just pure screeching.

So I've had to learn how to pull us out of the loop. Take a breath, reset the energy, step back long enough to remember we're on the same team, buddy. Even though it doesn't feel like it. Empathy is a gift, but it definitely needs volume control. So do you and your family have a feedback loop too? And what helps you reset when emotions get way too loud?
