  1. 0:01Mary and Jill teach life and personal development skills to teens and tweens

Mary Cadre: Fear has one job. It is to keep you from being the greatest version of yourself. She says to overcome fear, lean into it and do the thing that scares you anyway. Cadre says to keep a fear diary to document failures. Once you overcome your fears, you are unstoppable.

Have you ever stopped to think about how basic fear is? If you don't know me, my name is Mary. This is my best friend and business partner, Jill, and we teach life and personal development skills to teen and tween girls. And the subject of fear obviously comes up a lot, right? We have imposter syndrome, comparisonitis, fear of putting yourself out there, going after that team. But fear has one job. This is what makes it so basic. It is to keep you from being the greatest version of yourself, from going after that dream for pursuing your purpose.

And if we know that one thing about fear, then we get to feel the fear and do it anyway. And today, that's exactly what we want to talk about. We want to teach you a couple of things to remind yourself when your fear starts, starts to creep up and stop you from actually going after the things that are important to you or what you want to be up to in your life. Because I don't know about you, mayor, but there have been times in my life where fear has kept me small. Oh, it's paralyzed me. It's paralyzed me, too.

And looking back on that, I'm like, man, I wish I would have known how to overcome that or at least learn to dance with it, that I could have felt the fear and do it anyway. So that's exactly what we want to teach you in this video. And in order to do that, you have to be strong and courageous. Because if we know that fear has one job and one job only, then we can feel that fear, lean into it and do the thing that scares us anyway. Because then we get to look back on ourselves, on our accomplishments, on the things that we've overcome and know that we felt it.

And we can do it again and again and again, despite the fact that fear is going to creep up in all of the things that are likely new, in all of the things that you don't know how to overcome, you're going to want to sit down on yourself. So the reminder of being strong and courageous are really important. And how do we do that? We do that by keeping a fear diary. Yep. Might sound different than what diaries we've used to keep when we were younger, but it's a diary around all of the things that you messed up or made mistakes doing in your day or having conversations with people that didn't go right.

Write those down. Write those mistakes. Downs, those mess ups, those learnings and missteps. Those missteps. And then on the other side of that diary is, what did you learn? Instead of thinking that it happened to you. How do you shift to where it happened for you? What lessons did you learn in those failures? Because what we like to say is that it's not an if, it's a win when it happens again, because, yes. Did you stumble over something in that presentation that totally took you out of getting that promotion?

You did. Bet you learned something. And then when you get that chance to go after that promotion again, I guarantee you're going to remember that feeling or that experience to do better next time, especially if you document it. Then you get to go back and not only know that you overcame it, but you get to see it in your own words and the lesson you learned in that specific moment. So keep a fear diary. It should be two columns. What was the fear? What did you fail at? What did you miss? Step on.

On the other side should be, what did you learn from it? Because we don't fail. We either win or we learn. And we only do that by experimenting with our fears, experimenting with our failures every single day on purpose. And once you can accomplish that, fear is not going to stop you any longer. And when fear doesn't stop you, it's not going to stop the people around you, because you're going to be a great example of a fear experiment scientist for them. You are going to be unstoppable. And we can't wait to hear what fears you're breaking through and overcoming because you put these practices into place.

So, until next time, Cadre fan fam, go out there and overcome your fears by being strong and courageous in them. We'll see you. Bye.
