In this video, Dr. Carrie explains 3 critical and specific dates that she and her husband took action on to set up their marriage for a lifetime of love and why these dates are so important to foster effective communication and avoid conflict.
Doctor Carey recommends three dates that any couple should have with their partner. The budget finance date should occur weekly or bi weekly. This should be a business discussion with a set time set aside. These are important conversations to have with your partner.
The gut check date is where you rate how you're feeling about your relationship. The fun date is when you get out and share an activity together. These are crucial for a relationship long lasting. I would love to hear how these works for you guys.
I've been reading this book called eight conversations for a lifetime of love. It's about eight dates that you and your husband or partner or someone should go on and discuss in order to have a healthy relationship. I'm Doctor Carey, I'm a creator here at Cadre and I am a relationship expert. Not an expert in marriage, but having been through one failed marriage and now entering into a new marriage, I'm definitely setting myself up for success with these things. So I wanted to go through three dates that I recommend.
This book covers a lot more, but just three dates that I recommend any couple have on a regular basis with their partner. Whether you're in a long term relationship or you've been married for 50 years, these are important conversations to have with your partner. So date number one is called the budget finance date. This is not a fun one. I'm not going to lie. I don't enjoy these conversations because it can bring up some emotions about how we're spending, how we're saving. But my husband and I made the decision that we are going to have these conversations on a weekly basis and we have it over coffee.
We sit at the table together and it is where we get to air all of our thoughts and feelings and grievances and ideas about how we're going to budget for our future. It can be a fun date. It doesn't have to be hard. And if finances are a tough topic for you to talk about, I would encourage you to delve into some of the money mindsets and some of the other things from creators at Cadre about how to dig out some of those ideas you have around money. You know, you kind of have to understand your own thoughts around money before you talk about it with someone else.
But these can be really challenging conversations. So I highly recommend that this date occur weekly or bi weekly, whatever you set it up to be. But it that occur almost like a business meeting because that's really what you're doing. This should not be when you go out and have fun and go out and try a new restaurant and get away from the kids. This should be a business discussion with a set time set aside for it. So we've decided that we do this at our kitchen table with one laptop chairs sitting next to each other with coffee.
So it's a morning discussion. So we're not tired, we're not fatigued having these discussions and we get to decide as a couple how we want to set up our life as far as budgeting and finances. Date number two is one that we just implemented called the gut check date. And again, this could be a 15 minutes conversation, it could be an hour, but I would encourage you to separate this one again from your fun date. So this one is basically, how are we feeling? How are we feeling with our relationship?
How are we feeling with our family? This is where you get to rate and say, you know what, I'm struggling in an area or I'm holding a little bit of resentment for you not taking out the trash when I asked you to the other day. These are real things in marriage and in relationships, especially when you cohabitate with someone. So you get an opportunity to speak those things out loud in a safe place. Again, I highly recommend this doesn't occur late at night and it doesn't occur with any of the other types of meetings, but this is also kind of your ability to dream about the future.
As far as what do we want our relationship to look like? Maybe we need to plan some more dates or plan an outing or something that we really need to get away as a couple. And that's the time to discuss that date. Number three is the fun date. This is the one that we all know how to do. Because when we date someone, we're usually pretty good at doing fun dates. Go out and share an activity together. This is really important for couples. This is where you remember that you're friends first and foremost, and you're attracted to each other and you enjoy each other's company.
This is crucial for a relationship long lasting, that you get out and have fun together. It doesn't have to be a full six hour evening. It doesn't have to be a weekend away, but it needs to be out of the house and out of your environment. And this is one where you get to just have fun and pick something. Maybe it's something really creative. You can do these on a budget. My husband and I just went to the park and walked around the other day. It can be anything like that that just gets you out of your normal environment to just enjoy each other's company and then make sure that you don't talk about the budgeting or talking about how we're doing as a relationship on that date, because it needs to be focused on fun and just enjoying each other.
So those are my tips for the three dates that I recommend for a lifetime of happiness. I have implemented these in my own life and I would love to hear how this works for you guys.
