Hey there cadre happy Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, Saturday, happy Saturday, cadre. How are we doing on this today? Mm. I hope you're great. Uh, I have a long week. Um, now realizing Iran. Sydney marathon, not even a week ago, but it feels like a long, long time ago. Um, and then I flew back from Sydney. And then I flew to Houston. And I flew back from Houston and then I. Uh, rode an emceed and played piano for a rock concert. And then played at a jazz comedy show and then woke up this morning and.

Hopped on my bike and got a little movement in. Uh, and now I'm getting ready to head to a 10 hour rehearsal. And the reason I say it is cause we all have that. Right. We're always all doing all the things all the time. Right. Mel. Like it's. Boom, boom, boom, boom. The world kind of maybe wants to convince us. It's like, oh my gosh, if you're doing so much, there's probably something wrong. Or wow. If you don't know how to stop doing. Well, there's something wrong. In reality, no doing stuff is, is part of the puzzle.

And the joy is often locked in the doing the stuff. And maybe the not, not being able to do this stuff. Um, is, um, is part of the, part of the great puzzle we get to. Wrestle with. Um, and yeah, there are times we need to learn how to maybe stop. Um, and maybe there's times we have to learn how to go. Here's the thing. Um, we get really good at being. Sold or selling or buying. Um, metrics. Like, okay. Here's the thing, track this thing. Cuz this thing will tell you. Ah, this number says you haven't gotten enough sleep.

Oh, this number says you moved enough today. Oh, this number says you've eaten enough. Oh, this number says you've reached your goals. All those things are potentially really good. When the metric becomes, uh, greater than the joy. When the metric becomes the thing that matters. It's a good thing to check. Um, it's funny. If you look over this shoulder, there's a guy sitting on the side of a bed, his name. Name's Kurt Vonnegut. Maybe you've heard his name. He's a. Pretty, uh, pretty famous author.

And there was a class of high school students back in the. Hmm. Must have been the early two thousands. Yeah. Cuz he was in his eighties. Eighties. Um, and, um, this class of high school kids. Uh, they're they're assignment was to write their favorite authors. Authors and say, Hey, favorite authors. Authors, um, you should come and visit our class. It's like, of course. Like, who's going to, who's gonna like, like big time famous people. Aren't gonna go ahead and, you know, fly to this high school and come talk to.

Their class. Good morning. Junk food junkie. Um, but out of all of the authors that were written to. Um, the only one who replied was, uh, Kurt. Kurt wrote a letter on his typewriter back. Saying, Hey, I'd love to come visit, but I'm old and I can't. Can't um, but he sat down and wrote an eight and a half by 11 page letter to the class with. Um, ideas and thoughts and. Um, personality. Kurt, the reason why Kurt's on my wall is Kurt's my guy. Um, and the reason why John candy and Steve by are on my wall is.

Uh, they might they're my guys too. Um, and they remind me of things. These two, they remind me that the journey. Um, and the destination both have value. This guy reminds me. That remembering why you do what you do. Like I write to share the things inside of me with people that I don't know yet. That's the joy. If the, if the metric becomes more important than that, it's like, I need to write the next thing. Or I need to X. When the metric becomes greater than the joy. It may be time to go ahead and take a look and go, why am I doing this in the first place?

So invitation for you today. Make sure you're finding more joy. Than you are tracking the metrics. See you tomorrow.
