Kathy does a bit of show-and-tell with a moth token, explaining it as a reminder of her goal to perform at a Moth story slam and possibly TEDx. She also mentions Cadre-branded stationery and light personal anecdotes.
Broadcasting from a local coffee shop, Kathy talks about her drink and the cafe, then recounts a recent three-hour trip to see elk in Pennsylvania, the elk history, missing the animals, and the pleasant scenery despite not spotting them.
Kathy explains why she uses the harbor pilot as a template for Cadre, using the metaphor of pilots guiding large ships into unfamiliar waters to describe how the Cadre community provides local wisdom and support. She encourages exploration of the app's resources.
Kathy outlines her weekly Thursday caregiver live stream, shares that she cares for her 95-year-old mother and reads poetry to her, and previews an upcoming simpler journaling practice (artist's notebook and Morning Pages) to be covered next week.
Kathy reads the lyrics to 'The Gathering of Spirits' (also thinking of it as 'Festival of Friends'), reflects on kindred-spirits within Cadre, and closes with the song's repeated refrains about reunion, love, and shared connections.
I got a cadre notification that I missed my live stream, but it's 1130 and it says live up in the upper left hand corner. So I'm going to go with that and say that we are live. Could I get a heart emoji or something indicating that you're actually watching me in real time? And I love it if you watch the replay later. My name is Kathy, Kathy Joy. And oh good, you see me. Hi. And my handle here in the Cotter Sphere is Speak Wonder. because I like to speak wondrous things into your life. And I like to take words and shape them and mold them into poetry like a sculpture of words.
I have some great poetry to read to you today by the vocalist is Alison Krauss and the writer is Carrie Newcomer. I have my moth here in the forefront because, yeah, show and tell day. because I aspire to be a speaker on a moth story slam event someday. Not sure how to begin. I think there might be some contributors here who know about that. Maybe even Miss Shannon Paul. I want to be on a story slam stage with the moth. And I know I can pitch my story. I know there's a toll free number. I just need to do the thing.
This little moth is a reminder, a visual reminder to me. I carry it on the console in my car so that I can remember that I want to be a moth speaker. Who knows? Sky's the limit. Maybe the TEDx and the TED stage. More show and tell. I have cadre stationary. I think there's a way you can go and get cadre stuff. I am in a coffee shop right across the street from where I live in northwestern Pennsylvania. It's called The Buzz and it's coffee and they have a full menu, breakfast and lunch, breakfast and lunch.
This particular brew is Cafe Americano. Possibly my favorite, it runs neck and neck with the Cafe, Cafe, Coffee, Brevy. Brevy is made with half and half, so I don't like to do that a whole lot because, black coffee is supposed to be better for you. But we can be renegades when we want to. Yesterday I went to use some elk and here is the only elk I saw, which was on the brochure. That was it. I went to this lovely place, three hours drive, one way, in Pennsylvania called Benezet, Pennsylvania. And back in the 70s, elk herds from a big elk herd from Colorado was transported by train to Pennsylvania because it was deemed by people who know these things that the elk could survive in that part of Pennsylvania.
And there are 1,400 head of elk, bulls, cows, lots of elk, lots of elk. But We went the wrong time of day, y'all. I didn't study up and do my research as I should have and I learned that when they're in rut, which is now, September, October, mating season, they will bugle and I've heard bugling when I was a resident of Colorado. It's an amazing, otherworldly sound, the bugling they make. It's very high pitched. It's amazing. m. you'll probably see some um however my travel companion and I it's still telling me I missed my live stream but I don't think I did because you guys are joining in right can I have a heart emoji I just need some extra reassurance I keep getting pop-ups from the cadre I'm going to plunge ahead y'all My friend Laura and I elected not to stay because there were storms in the forecast and we wanted to get back home to Erie, Pennsylvania before the storms happened.
So we didn't see any elk. 1400 had you guys. There's only like 800 residents in this tiny town so they are outnumbered a lot by the elk and we didn't see any. There's irony for you. Still was a great trip. That's a good conversation. Beautiful scenery. And we saw the leaves beginning to change. You do see me. OK. I'll quit being so needy. Thank you. So why is Harbor Pilots my template in the cadre? I'm glad you asked. If you're new, then you might not know. If you've been with me a while, then you know that Harbor Pilot is a real job in real harbors all over the globe.
in which these pilots of smaller vessels go out into the harbor and the cargo ship or the larger vessel, sometimes replicas of old ships, come sailing in. You've maybe heard of tall ships events in various harbors around the world. The harbor pilot goes out and actually climbs up a rope ladder. It's called a Jacob's ladder. into the steerage and steers the large boat into port. Why not the captain? Well, because they don't know the local waters. They're not familiar with the sandbars and the hazards and all the things that might be lurking underneath, but the local knows.
And you know what? I'm glad I brought that up because cadre is like that. Sometimes we come sailing in And Cadre is a wellness app here, as you know, where you can go exploring and different things, different communities. Just bounce around and punch buttons. You're going to find so much support for your life and joyful things, new discoveries. Be curious and look around. And just like that captain of that ship coming in, You might need some assistance navigating waters that are unfamiliar or that you're getting tired of the challenges and you'd like somebody else to kind of take the steering wheel.
That's what happens in the Cadre. It's a beautiful thing. It happens organically. Sometimes when I plug in, I'm not sure what I'm needing, but I just poke around until I find something that speaks to my heart that day. and I'm navigating waters that I need help with. For me, I'm on Thursdays, that's my live day every week, 1130 Pennsylvania time, and I talk about caregiving. Not always specifically, but that is the framework in which I address you. I'm the caregiver to my 95 year old mother. She's not in my home.
She's in a nursing home. But I was told many times from the very capable staff there that I am indeed still a caregiver because emotionally I show up for mom on the phone in person with a slice of her favorite pie and she too. is a lover of good poetry. So I come in and read poems to her. Some of them are mine even because moms love their kids stuff. So I'm a caregiver. And I'm here to support you in that endeavor for sure. I do remember last week at the end of my life, I said that I would get on the stream this week and tell you about journaling I totally forgot I have some maybe unorthodox ideas about journaling to make it simpler so since today is not really about journaling I'm just going to give you a quick sketch of what I'll be doing next week I'm going to delay that topic because I want to give it a little more time and space and I'll do that next week so this is basically an artist's notebook.
It's cardstock paper. It's perforated so you can tear the pages out. And I love to write big and I love to take up the whole page. And so that's one thing I like to do in journaling is Get a blank canvas, just like an artist would, just like a painter or watercolor or a sketch artist, and start writing. I do have a practice that I enjoy called Morning Pages. I'll talk about that next week. It just takes the mystique and the labor out of journaling, and I want to do that for you. Journaling is so good for you.
You do not have to be a writer to journal. sidebar, I'm reading a great book, The You of Golden. I have about halfway to go. It's very good. This is what I'm getting to finally. I'm going to take about four or five minutes more of your time and I'm going to read this song lyrics. This is called The Gathering of Spirits and it just jumped out at me when I heard it on the radio, actually, you know, on my Pandora you know how they send you music that you like and this popped up and I was smitten with the not only the melody which I will not sing for you but the lyrics and um again big promotion for cadre in this live stream today uh in the support of caregivers of different days different things sobriety grief and recovery.
It's just so many things. I have a bunch of ones, a bunch of streams I try to show up for, and they're all just so enriching. And each day has a theme. Thursday's Caregiver Day. Later on today, you'll see Miss Shannon Paul and her live stream, Comedy Through the Chaos. She's funny, she's deep. She's relevant. She's relatable. Festival of Friends is the title, actually the song title is The Gathering of Spirits and I think of the cadre as kindred spirits. We are gathering together. My friend is reporting her husband is breathing better now.
They're in a lower elevation where they live now and I'm so pleased to hear that. Thank you. It's fun to do this in a coffee shop because you're hearing ambient sounds and people are looking at me as though to say, who are you talking to? Gathering of spirits, we are kindred spirits. Whenever we lean over the fence and talk to each other, sip a cup of coffee, have a conversation, find out that we're not alone in our journey, and we're certainly not. going to wash up in the harbor. Someone will guide you safely into port.
And you will guide somebody else, depending on the day. Let it go, my love, my truest. Let it sail on silver wings. Life's a twinkling, that's for certain. But it's such a fine thing. There's a gathering of spirits. There's a festival of friends and we'll take up where we left off when we all meet again. I can't explain it. I couldn't if I tried. How the only things we carry are the things we hold inside, like a day out in the open, like the love we won't forget, like the laughter that we started and it hasn't died down yet.
Oh, let it go, my love, my truest. Let it sail on silver wings. Life's a twinkling, that's for certain, but it's such a fine thing. There's a gathering of spirits, there's a festival of friends, and we'll take up where we left off when we all meet again. Oh yeah, now didn't we? And don't we make it shine? Aren't we standing in the center of something rare and fine? Wade out in the water, there's a glory all around and the wisest say there's a thousand ways to kneel and kiss the ground. Oh, let it go, my love, my truest, let it sail on silver wings.
Life's a twinkling, that's for certain, but it's such a fine thing. There's a gathering of spirits, there's a festival of friends, and we'll take up where we left off when we all meet again.
