A dead friend’s birthday came across my Facebook timeline. What do you do about that?
What do we do with our dead friends account? Do we delete it? Or do we remain friends and every so often smile at the memories? Suffer through the memories, yeah. But it's up to you.
So I wrote a sub stack about what. What do we do when our friends die and they come across our social media, Facebook, Instagram, whatever it is their account comes across and puts us in, you know, a mood or whatever. But what do we do with the account? Do we unfriend them? Do we hold on to the account and keep it like it is a, you know, curated exhibit? You know, Charlene Lamb does it. Does it great. She has a great thing on curating grief. Check that out when you get a chance. But I'm always wondering about that because, like, yesterday I was happily scrolling through Facebook as we do not doom scrolling, because I've curated my Facebook to only show me, you know, mostly good things.
Like, I've done my Instagram, but I'm, you know, I look over to the right, and I see the birth, upcoming birthdays and birthdays, and say, happy birthday to this person. And one of my friends shows up who died three years ago, and I'm sitting there like, oh, do I say happy Birthday? Do I reach out? So, you know, I decided to really honor that friend and listen to some music that we listened to together. I remember when the Frank Ocean Blonde album came out and we listened to. I listened to Self Control on repeat, right?
Like, just over and over, because I wanted to get the lyrics. Because there was this one line where he says, keep a place for me. I'll sleep between y'all. And I kept saying this. He's. Is he saying he'll sleep between them? And she was so. She was like, is that what it is? So we got into a big thing. But so it reminded me of her, and I really. It really made me smile, and so I was glad that I haven't unfriended her. But it's really up to you. It's really up to you to decide if you want to see those reminders.
I have friends who died, and I'm still friends with them on Facebook. And, you know, thanks to legacy accounts or just other people having their login information, there will be updates. And I'm always wondering, like, is this healthy, though? Like, I don't know if I want to see updates from my. From my dead friend, but I do want to keep it around because there are photos there. Of course I could save them, but I don't want to save them. I like to go over there and. And just see. And sometimes people will post tributes to that person or, you know, their own memories of.
Of that person. And you can see, like, a full story of who your friend was or who your family member was or whatever that is. But, yeah, you know, just something to think about. What do we do with our dead friends account? Do we delete it? Or do we remain friends and every so often smile at the memories? Suffer through the memories, yeah. But it's up to you. And I hope it's more smiling than anything else.
