  2. 2:48James Clear's book Atomic habits helps you break bad habits so you can have balance

We talked about habits, and I think it would be very smart to give you the gift of one of my favorite all time books, called atomic favorite habits by James Clear. Your life should be full and abundant. When you feel like your energy is in one area and neglecting or neglectful in another area, that's where you get to find your flow.

From big business secrets to small business success. My name is Mary. This is my best friend and business partner, Jill. And we wanted to share some things that we've picked up in corporate playbooks along the way that we have implemented into our small business nearly every single day. And whether you own a small business like us or you're still rocking it in corporate, we hope this message inspires and serves you in whatever position you're in today. We are talking about work life balance, and we know that that phrase has gotten a real bad rap over the last ten years because it's unrealistic.

But we're not talking about it in the blanket sense type of a way, as if your life fits in these beautiful little boxes. We want to talk about it in a way that actually serves you. And this was something that working at Lululemon actually really taught Jill and I to grab ahold of. So one of my biggest lessons that I learned was how do I work in the hours provided for me versus taking my work home and that then bleeding into my family time and the time that I want to prioritize with them. So that was the first aha.

Moment of, like, oh, man, I need to reprioritize how I get things done while I'm at work so that I can enjoy it at home. And a little aside in that is you will fill the hours you are given. So if you give yourself 3 hours, you will fill those 3 hours. But if you give yourself permission to take your work home, you will work at home as well. Absolutely. And for me, as a new mom, I didn't want that. I wanted to get it done. It took some time and practice, and that the whole point of this conversation is that it's an assessment.

You need to practice redoing habits and breaking old habits and starting new ones in order to find the balance. Mary has a really beautiful analogy around your life being a hose, a garden hose, and your life should flow. It should be. It should feel good between work, life, and everything else in between. But if your hose is kinked, something needs to be readjusted. There is a kink in your hose, and that is stopping your flow. And we're not saying that your flow should be consistent every single waking hour of your day.

That in and of itself is unrealistic. But something that Jill has taught me is that it's gonna be there tomorrow. And she's right. Every single time that I don't get something done on my to do list, and I decide to go to bed, guess what's there waiting for me tomorrow. It's the workload, and it's Jill as well. We talked about habits, and I think it would be very smart to give you the gift of one of my favorite all time books, which is called atomic favorite habits by James Clear. Because realistically, breaking habits is very difficult.

It's why we don't do it. It's why when we're pressed, when we're stressed, we revert back to old habits. And atomic habits is an incredible book that gives you bite size, information and steps in order to break those habits and create new ones for yourself, like Joe was talking about, so that you can have balance. Your life should be full and abundant. And when you feel like your energy is in one area and neglecting or neglectful in another area, that's where you get to find your flow. Be in dance.

Be in a dance with your own life and adjust. It's going to ebb and flow based off of the season that you're at in your life. So a quick assessment. Where are the kinks in your hose? And where and how do you un kink them in order to find that flow? Give yourself some space, give yourself some grace. And we're excited to hear how thinking of work like life balance in this way impacts your life in a positive manner. And until next time, Jill, myself and Delilah will see you on the next video. Bye, everyone.
