Alyssa, manager of bereavement services with St. Gray Hospice, shares a grounding exercise. Use your five senses to identify things in each of those categories. After focusing on those five senses, notice how you're feeling in your mind and body.

Hi again. I'm Alyssa, manager of bereavement services with St. Gray Hospice. In a previous video, we learned a breathing technique for when we're feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stressed. But I'm going to share with you today a grounding exercise or a technique that can help calm yourself and focus on the present moment by using your five senses, identifying things in each of those categories. First, let's look at the site. Look around you. Is there something that you have not noticed before? Looking in the room, is there a picture?

Maybe you're sitting outside and there's a flower pot that you noticed for the first time. Smell. What can you smell in the space around you? Again, maybe you're sitting outside. You can smell the grass. Or you're in your office and you smell the coffee grumps. Going, going. Next, let's look at sound. When you're very quiet, what are you hearing? Do you hear the phone ringing? Do you hear the clock ticking? Touch what around you are you able to feel in your hands? Can you pick up the pen on your desk?

Can you feel the grooves in a penny? Taste what around you. Are you able to taste? Is it your water? Is it your snack? After focusing on those five senses, take a moment to notice how you're feeling in your mind and again in your body.
